106 front wheel nuts shredded - scfc_151
My sister has a 106 1.1 y reg and i recently took the front road wheels off to check the brakes and had difficulty in taking the wheel nuts out. When they finally came i wasnt pleased to see metal fillings comming out with the nuts. The nuts have completely lost their thread and im sure the hub threads are shot too.

If i were to find a 106 on a scrap yard to pinch their hubs how difficult would it be to take off?

Would they need bearings replaced on refitting or is it as straight forward as taking the big nut off and pulling the hub off?

cheers

Get the whole hub and driveshaft as a unit, unless you can find a specialist breaker who keeps the hub unit [or a drive flange] on the shelf.

Everything you need to undo to remove it is FT. Never easy on a pile of cars.

It might be worth buying a tap & running it down the thread holes & buying new bolts. Sounds like they may of been overtightened. The bolts are usually weaker than the nuts. The die may well be a 12x1.25 or 14x1.25 but i'm sure some one will be quick to put me right. best to buy new bolts & then get a tap to match.

ive had this with 106 pewgots
i reckon airguns are to blame
i wouldnt tap it
i would source s/h good low mileage hubs these will need the balljoint /track rod end/ bolt/s? under bonnet removing
watch for the silly clip on the balljoint when replacing everything

Have a really good look at the threads on the studs, if they are OK, but just have nut deposits in the thread, then get an oiled die as said above to clean out these deposits and get a smooth finish. Then fit new nuts. Do you think the wrong nuts could have been forced on?

These cars have bolts not studs. The threads have almost certainly been damaged by abuse - it's a perfectly well engineered set up. I would suggest that re tapping the threads oversize in the hubs would be unsafe. This would need to be done in a machine shop to ensure that the threads were up to strength and square to the hub face. There is then the impossible problem of sourcing high tensile wheel bolts to fit the taper on the wheels with an increased diameter.

This is a safety issue - get new or undamaged used parts to replace those which are damaged.

I fully agree on the safety aspect but would recommend cleaning the threads with the original size tap and see if they look ok ,then trying new studs and torqueing them to 50% over wheelstud figures and if the threads hold they are safe to use at proper figures . you need new studs for other hubs anyway so have nothing to lose by this method other than your time with the tap
