Should I switch to all-season tyres?

Just bought a new car and it is fitted with summer tyres. Should I change 4 brand new summer tyres for All Season tyres before winter sets in? Or should I wait and see how the weather progresses?

Switching summer tyres for winter or all-season tyres is a matter of personal choice. It is important to factor in the weather conditions in your area during the winter months, how much driving you will do at that time of year and also the cost. An all-season tyre is essentially a compromise between a summer and a winter tyre - it offers superior grip to a summer tyre in winter conditions, but less so compared to a winter tyre, while the reverse is true in dry and warm conditions. British weather is also somewhat unpredictable - this winter could be particularly harsh or relatively mild and dry, but summer tyres start to lose optimum performance once the ambient temperature drops below 7 degrees Celcius.

If the budget allows then the ideal scenario is to have a second set of wheels for your vehicle and have this fitted with a good quality winter tyre, which will give you optimum performance whatever the conditions, although this is the most expensive option and also requires somewhere to store a spare set of wheels and tyres all year round.
