my car insurance was due for renewal at the beginning of march. I did not need the policy so i did not renew it. Then I found the premium had been taken from my credit card - and now they are saying i have to prove the car was insured elsewhere. I was simply not using the car - it may suit some people to have their insurnace renewed automatically but not me.
The complany is reviewing the case so i will find out soon what they will do. So, read your renewal notice carefully - this one said do nothing and we will renew and charge you!

That's what most are like now. And they usually give you a crap renewal quote in the hope you'll be lazy and not shop around

If it was a credit card, you should give them a ring and say you dispute the transaction. They should then freeze the payment. However, they usually have call centre people who have no idea what you are on about.

this is the first time for me - by coincidence my wife's renewal notice arrived today - this one needs you to phone and confirm the renewal - it is not automatically renewed; much the way I prefer.

All three insures I've used over the past 5 years or so have clearly stated in the renewal letter that if they don't hear from me, they will assume I want to renew the policy, and charge the full amount to my card.
It makes sense from their point of view. Not only do they get guaranteed repeat business from those of us who are too busy / lazy / uninterested to ring around, but it also guarantees they get the opportunity to speak to anyone wanting to take their business elsewhere before they actually go ahead and do it.
Cheers

I don't like that idea at all. What if their renewal letter got lost in the post? In any case, I like to make sure my bank account is looking healthy before a large once-a-year debit takes place!

On renewing my insurance last year my insurer politely and correctly ask me whether I wanted the next renewal taken automatically, unless otherwise instructed. I said no, of course, but it was nice to be asked.
I fully expected to renew with them, I've been with them 3 years, but circumstances mean that I probably wont this year, so a least I don't have to remember to cancel.

my insurer gets a cheque
banks are doing away with these paper things
