I am thinking of buying an 06 registered Mondeo from my local ford dealer. It is a 1.8LX and around £9700. Seems to have a/c and heated screen as standard.
What should I look for and what sort of mpg should I expect .
Appreciate if anyone has any comments.

Price seems fair though others will have a view, all I will say is that a 2.0 is livlier and as economical, I would reckon mid 30s.

Probs get around 30 - 35mpg depending upon your usage.

As for the price, I'm really not sure that it's all that good, I've seen 1 year - 18 month old Mondeo LX models from Ford Direct selling for £7,999 at our local Ford dealer. Probably not a bad choice of car but I think you could do a bit better on the price, especially with a new model on the way in a few months.

That's dear.

I would also go for the 2.0 engine. Essentially everything the same - but more power for negligible reduction in mpg.

Current Mondeo prices are on the edge of a cliff, wait until the new model appears and name your price. As mentioned by others, avoid the 1.8, it's gutless and the gearing is very wrong, unless it has a 6 speed box.

It hurts me to write this, but have you considered a TDCi? With a good warranty of course!

www.trade-sales.co.uk have three 06 reg 1.8LX with 17k for £7699. Why not go on their site, print the details off and wave it under the nose of the your local Ford dealers salesman?

Thank you all for your help and advice.
I cannot consider a diesel in any form because of my wife's asthma. Travelling in any diesel car causes mega problems. Petrol is fine.
What was the gearing comment? Are the engine revs quite high at motorway speeds?
A 2 litre is a possbility I had not thought of.

">Travelling in any diesel car causes mega problems.<" Yes, filthy things.

">Petrol is fine.<" Yes, I concur.

The 5 speed 1.8 LX Mk3 Mundano is undergeared in top, but then it probably has to be, with a mere 125ish bhp to haul a Granada size body around. Why not test the 1.8 and the 2.0? Of course, one advantage of the 1.8 Duratec engine is that it does respond to a good thrashing. But then who doesn't ....... ?

I've got a 1.8 Zetec. Over last 19k miles I've averaged 36 mpg. Over the last 3 months, since I started the commute up the M5, the average is nearer to 39 mpg.

Re power, it depends what you are used to at the moment. The 1.8 delivers a reasonable result, but if you are used to rocket acceleration then you will be disappointed. For everyday driving, the 1.8 is fine.

With the greatest respect Sir I find this impossible to believe..

Could you enlighten a bit please.

How on earth can it make any difference 'inside' the car?

To be honest I wish I knew. If she gets in any diesel car after a few miles she has breathing difficulties. Maybe only a trace of fumes is enough. At one time we thought it may be some reaction to the engine vibration. when I had an early escort diesel which was not very refined.
So I can assure you it is absolutely true and if anyone has any suggestions then they will be gratefully received.
Petrol cars are better but even not 100%.

Are you sure it's ANY diesel and not manufacturer specific. Some materials used on interior trims can cause asthmatic conditions.

It's too much to pay for an LX even though it is nearly new. You may as well get a slightly older Zetec at least. One of my mates bought a 2.5 V6 Y reg Mondeo Ghia X (new shape) for 3k. Yes its done 75,000 miles but its in excellent condition and loaded with gadgets. Obviously you want a newer model but this just shows what bargains you can get if you look around
