hi, along with my warning bulb (earlier posting) the clutch was making a bit of a racket after a long run today (idling in nuetral) but seemed quiter when i dipped the clutch pedal it doesnt slip at all when travelling so i dont suppose its the friction plate should i ignore it or get the clutch replaced and if so do the kits contain all the bits apart from the friction plate or will i need to go to a breaker for additional parts

Dry or knackered thrust bearing!

Fairly easy change and only a few quid

i looked in the haines manual about the clutch, seems you have to dis the transmission and alsorts to get into the clutch i hope there is an easy way to fix it could you elaborate a bit as to how i remedy the thrust bearing thanks

Remove the gearbox and the bearing is sat in the middle ,but while its out you may as well replace the clutch and pressure plate. Its like all work on a car if you have the correct tackle its a doddle .

To my mind this sort of noise is unlikely to be the release bearing - this is not loaded when the clutch is not pressed so unlikely to be noisy - it only gets loaded when the clutch is pressed, and that is when it usually complains. This sort of rattling is more likely to be play in the input shaft bearing or something - when you depress the clutch the box stops going round and the noise stops. I would try changing the gear oil first, but the box is probably on its way out - however, a bit of a rattle at idle is hardly reason to change the box....

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

See what difference it makes at idling with the clutch pedal fully released, pressed to the point of contact with the thrust bearing, and then fully depressed.
If it is the thrust bearing it will be nosy when actually used, but quiet otherwise.
It may be possible to squirt in a bit of lubricant, if there is an access hole by the operating lever or a ventilation slot. Don't overdo it, but a shot of spray grease might help.

When it next does it, have someone or a block of wood pull on the clutch pedal whilst you pull the clutch fork on the gearbox towards the front of the car. It should move fairly easily, and as it does so, it will pull the bearing away from the clutch completely. If the noise stops, that's your culprit. Otherwise it's the input bearing.

A release bearing will make a noise when unloaded if it is dry. It can actually appear to be quieter when in use as it is compressed.

This is perfectly normal on mk3/4/5 Fiestas. HJ mentions it in his car by car breakdown for these cars.

I quote "Some clutch noise (release bearing) at idle is common. Should go when in gear. Any noises when on move from gearbox? Run away. "

Our 1.4 does it, the three others we looked and and test drove did it, and our old Zetec-S did it. Nothing to worry about. These 'boxes are just noisy in neutral.

Cheers

My 1 year old Mark5 Fiesta was like that at 4k miles. and at 30k miles when I sold it...

As DP says, it's standard...

would topping up the gear box with gear oil help matters? as far as i know its not leaked any but it is a high mileage car

Not if it is the clutch that's noisy. The clutch is outside the gearbox.

Fwiw , I found depressing the clutch and then releasing it again when stationary in neutral sometimes reduced the noise levels..

I also changed the oil on son's Mark3 Fiesta - not as noisy as mine--- and found it made NO difference to any rattles at idle..

I found the noise very annoying at traffic lights....

Was there a resolution to this clutch issue. I have a similar noise with a 2004 1.25 Fiesta. Many thanks

As DP above says this is a feature of these cars, we have a 12 year old Fiesta, when the car was 1 year old, we queried this noise with the dealer, he pointed out they all did this, apparently they had just cahanged a gearbox on a similar Fiesta( for this reason) and the new one was worse!

11 years on our Fiesta is still the same the noise doesn't seem to have got worse, perhaps we are less fussy.
