oil turns to coal in sump - oilrag
Well not quite ;)
Question,
Has anyone seen any evidence of sludging or long term extra wear running modern service intervals?
I`m thinking of the 12/18months 20,000 mile ones and with particular reference to the filter element being visible to inspect on most new cars.

It was this link from the USA that interested me.

Nothing to do with long term servicing but my son in law a few years ago bought his now long gone Vauxhall Carlton to my house to have the oil changed.
The engine was warm and it drained as normal into a 5litre can.
The following morning I took the can down to the local recycling plant and began to drain it into their tank.
The oil had virtually solidified and I left it propped on the tank lid for around twenty minutes for it to slurp out. It was virtually tar and how the starter motor managed to turn the engine over when cold remains a mystery. And how long since it was changed is anybodys guess. I think it was a credit to the Carlton actually as with virtually no servicing it was indestructable.

I'm guessing this was the 2.0 8valve engine. They are incredible things.

A previous employer ran a fleet of Vauxhalls and they bought a 1992 Cavalier SRi and a 92 Carlton 2.0iGL as pool cars. They were bought for peanuts off the lease company at the end of their terms (at this stage both had around 120k and full Vauxhall s/h). Both had around 60k put on them over the next couple of years without servicing it in any way shape or form. Everyone thrashed themt, nobody cared for them, and yet both idled sweetly, ran smoothly, didn't smoke and pulled well. Apart from tyres and brakes (when they started grinding), the cars had no attention at all.

I reckon these engines must be good for 300k+ if serviced properly. I thought it was a fantastic advert.

Cheers

The 4 cylinder SAAB 9-5 engine has had problems with sludge. To such an extent that a goodwill gesture has been made by Saab if breakdown occurs (see HJ's car by car breakdown).
My Saab specialist recommends taking the sump out for a good clean, and Saab themselves recommend 6000mile oil changes if you stop start a lot.
