Mondeo diesel running roughly - Alebear
Friend's S reg 1998 Mondeo diesel:
The engine has started to run very roughly. Took it in to Ford dealer, they checked ECU etc. I suspected a slight blockage in the injection - so have put detergents in and given it an Italian tune up (ie revved it lots in driving). No joy - if anything the knocking , and occasional belching of smoke from exhaust have increased. Any ideas or tips?

Did the dealer check the injection timing? Just wondering if the pump belt has slipped a tooth or the pulley has moved. The pump pulley is not keyed to the shaft meaning it can move if the bolts aren't tight.

Cheers

Could be the diaphragms in the aneroid unit on the pump; or maybe the pump solenoid. Just take it to a diesel specialists; a dealers workshop hasn't the time, or the experience, to sort a proper diesel. The ECU is very much an add-on extra to these.

I was going to say the same thing. It's allegedly got an EECIV module on it, but what it does I haven't yet worked out. You set these engines up with spanners, screwdrivers, dial gauges and timing pins, not a laptop. Idle speed, fuel enrichment, injection timing and even governor settings are all manually adjustable on these engines. It was one of the reasons I went for one.

A split diaphragm is a common fault, but the symptoms are normally random "surging" of revs as diesel leaks into the inlet. The other common fault is the EGR valve, but this usually just makes the car smoke badly. The test is simple - disconnect it, stick a tight fitting ball bearing in the vacuum pipe. and tape the pipe up out of the way. If it improves, there's your problem, although I don't think so in this case.

It's probably an emissions thing. I only found out that they run fine without electronics when, 10+ years ago, I grafted one of my pile of brand-new Mondeo TD engines into the workshop hack - an old 1.8 Fiesta van. After "modifying" the PATS, the thing ran [and absolutely flew!] with no ECU at all.

Aneroid unit faults can do all sorts; even burst the tank. It depends which - or both - of the diaphragms goes; they're getting harder to source now - I haven't seen the early type anywhere of late. LSUK won't even sell the whole unit anymore - supply and fit only.

Always handy to have a pile of engines kicking around ;-) Were they earmarked for anything in particular, or was it just too good an offer to refuse.

Can't reveal where they came from; but they were complete, unfitted, new units [pump, turbo, even alternator and clutch;] they've been handy for bits [and boats] over the years. Only got one left now.
