SWMBO 2001 Mazda 1.6l, 323F. Engine warning light is now permanently illuminated- car still runs fine and no apparent problems.
Is this an MOT failure or will it depend on the emissions readouts?

Can find nothing in the manual relating to the engine/ECU warning light.
The only testable warning lights seem to be the ones for ABS (where fitted), direction indicators and hazards.

Although not the same car. My mothers Micra went in with engine warning light on last month. Passed OK.

Engine warning light of itself is not a fail, but obviously it is on for a reason and emissions may be high.

No not a failure, nor is airbag light, ABS light is MOT failure. As for your engine management light stayin on the only way to sort it out is to have the car plugged into diagnositic equipment at a reputable garage

Hi, probably the engine knock sensor causing this. I had the same problem on my 2001 model-year 323. Cost about £115 for a new sensor. I've since learned this is a known problem and the sensor is 'listening' for the wrong frequency. As it's a known problem, why not ask Mazda for some good-will and request they contribute towards its repair? Worth a try?
