1998 mondeo. is it as tdi, or just a td? - bazzab22000
i have a 1998 s reg mondeo td. is this a td injection or just a td?

It's a 1.8 turbo diesel, no direct injection (e.g. 1.8 TDDI in Focus) and not common rail (e.g. 1.8 TDCI also in the Focus).

It knocks out around 88bhp and 132lb/ft torque. Compared to latest mondeo 2.0 TDCI: 130 bhp and 240lb/ft - how things have come on!

IIRC, it's a derivative of a 1.6 non-turbo diesel engine first use in the Fiesta a long, long time ago.

Yes, the Haynes manual confirms this. I think the 1.6D frst appeared around 1983, so it was getting on a bit even when the Mondeo was first launched.

Apart from the capacity hike and forced induction, most of the development during this engine's life centred around the cambelt which gained an early reputation for premature failure. By the time the engine appeared in the mk2 Mondeo as the Endura DE it had a fatter belt, modified tensioner arrangement (and a new tensioning procedure), and a redesigned cover which was better at keeping out dirt. Accepted wisdom is still to change both belts and tensioners at least every 30k though.

Oh, and it gained a whopping 2 bhp when it became the Endura DE giving an earth shattering 90 bhp to play with.

The basic block is still used in the Focus, CMAX and even the new SMAX today where thanks to common rail injection and flash variable nozzle turbos it turns out anything up to 125 bhp.

Cheers

And IME is more refined than the later 90 or 110 ps 1.6 PSA/Ford engine as also used in the Focus and C-Max plus C4, Peugeots etc etc.
