I seem to remember Top Gear 'featured' an irritating device that fitted inside the fuel cap of diesel cars and emitted an audible warning when you went to refuel.

Joking aside, was this a genuine device and if so anyone know where they can be bought?
We have recently had three of our company car drivers misfuel cars with the corresponding onconvenience and expense of putting this right.

Thanks

Somebody made a device, like the thing from those 'talking' greetings cards, but I understand they have ceased trading. There was another device mooted in a which there would be a magnetic area on the fuel pump, near the nozzle holster, onto which one could stick one's filler cap, also equipped with a magnet. Doesn't stick = wrong pump. Again, I don't know if this has come and gone or is still to arrive on the market.

Yes, they're usually about £5 on ebay (diesel guard)
Soon there will be an annoying but cheaper and simpler DIESEL bonce-bopper thing that bounces around in front of the the filler cap when you open the flap.
Another alternative is....

What a lame website (Although I'm sure the product is good)

"Based on advanced Formula-1 racing technology" yes I always see F1 drivers pulled over with the commentator stating "OH NO HE GOT THE PUMP COLOURS MIXED UP, THAT'S THIS RACE OVER FOR SCHUMACHER".

There is somebody selling the 'talking greetings card insert' on eBay for 99p but he wants £1.95 p/p. How can an evelope and a first class stamp cost that much? Effectively they are £2.90 each.

You are also paying for his labour to package the item and his travel time/expenses to get down to the post office. When you think of the time it takes do that its a bargain really as even at minimum wage, 15 minutes is about £1 and a bit and chances are he doesn't fancy himself as a minimum wage earner.

The spring loaded filler cap is not a bad idea, though I don't refuel often enough to make it worthwhile purchasing. Also not sure how well it would seal against spillage or more importantly if it would create a tight enough vapour seal as I know that some petrol cars show warning or check engine lights if the fuel filler cap is not closed tightly.

He isn't selling it for 99p, that's the opening bid, with over 4 days to go.
I think £1.95 is fair, and also postage costs don't count towards seller's fees.
A jiffy bag is £1, and uninsured postage would be 88p.
He may also be underwrtiting his own postal insurance as I do.

Ashok L. I don't pay £1 for a Jiffy bag, I buy them in bulk , and 1st Class postage is the cost of stamp - is that 35p at the moment? Where does 88p for a first class letter or light packet come from? The thing he is selling normally goes inside a greetings card and that doesn't cost 88p to send.

I don't really get the spring loaded filler cap, I suppose it's just designed to make you go "WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?" and then you notice the diesel/unleaded text.

Here is the bonce-bopper thing....found it at last....

Will have a look at some of the other alternatives mentioned. Perhaps the 'talking' one is a little extreme. I assume it repeats itself until the flap is closed again?

Strangely though it wouldn't have worked anyway as the driver actually put diesel in a petrol car! I thought this was impossible due to the larger diameter of diesel pump nozzles? Car was an 03 Vectra.

Which is in fact worse for the car? diesel in a petrol, or petrol in a diesel ?

I think nothing should be done, it could be a sort of stupidity tax with half the cost of fixing the damage going to the government or something.

Seriously why do some people find it so hard to... put the correct fuel in?

I've driven many cars both petrol and diesel and have never gone to put diesel in an obviously petrol car or vice versa, and yes, that includes diesels which are very quiet, such as 530d.
