Nissan Micra - disposing of and hopefully getting some dosh!

We currently have a P reg. Nissan Micra Shape 1.0L which has been sitting on our driveway since August 2005 when the engine came to an unfortunate end after the timing chain snapped. After researching into putting a reconditioned engine into the car we have decided that this is not a cost-effective option since we do not have the means nor ability to do it ourselves.

We need to dispose of the car and understand that we can take it to a scrapyard, but feel that we might lose out. Apart from the engine and a couple of minor dents on the body work, the car is in fairly good condition. The tyres were on for less that a year and the battery was only four months old.

Does anyone have any ideas about the best way of disposing of it and getting some money back? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Ebay

Yep Ebay is the way forward - take several good photo's from all around the car, write a good but honest description then start the auction on a thursday evening and place it on a 10 day auction. You then get the benefit of 2 weekends worth of ebay viewing so you stand a better chance of getting a decent price for it..

I'd agree with the above, but as an alternative check what price second hand parts for micra's go for on ebay, it may be worth your while breaking it for parts and selling via Ebay, then getting what's left taken away. I have heard that you can donate cars to the fire brigade for practicing on, they would probably take a car with many parts missing without wanting you to pay them for disposal of oil, tyres etc.

But selling the entire car would be easier.

Thanks peeps for the quick response! :) I've got loads of stuff I'd like to sell on ebay but am a bit apprehensive about it as it looks rather complicated. I've seen books the size of small directories (and the same colour - yellow) written on the subject.

So! This looks like a good opportunity to take the plunge. I'm sure it's not that scary! Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I can find a short but concise guide to selling on ebay that covers the potential pitfalls too?

Once again cheers!

if its been sitting on your drive for ten months and the neighbours havent given any complaints why not keep it and use it as a small tomatoe /greenhouse shed,i hear the bubble shape k11 has 55% glass above the swage and is therefore ideal for small fruit/vegetable growing .
alternatively scrap the thing and make your neighbours happy again

Hi all! I still haven't got round to selling this heap yet! Thx for the responses btw. I'm not really interested in breaking or selling spares, I just want to get rid of the thing! I would like to advertise it on Ebay but after spending what seems like ages researching prices I am unsure how much it is worth as it no longer runs. Last time I checked the list prices two years ago a good specimen would have been worth approx. £700. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you!

Could you not just get a cylinder head off ebay which will include the camshaft, rockers, and valves i.e everyhing which is probably damaged. I know for a Fiesta they go for around £20. I don't know how much a big a job it is on a micra, but when my mums friend 16valve escort engine needing rebuilding as a result of a cam belt failure it was £700 to repair it. Now a micra is going to be a lot less than that.

If you don't need the car which am guessing you don't then its probably best to get rid. Ebay really is the best bet.

Don't sell as needing a new engine, just explain the cambelt snapped so it will need a new belt, pulleys, tensioners, valves and what ever else was damaged.

"I just want to get rid of the thing! " So why are you researching prices?

Ebay is an auction, it's not like the free ads, despite the way some cars are described. Stick it on and it will find it's own price. One thing's for sure, it's not increasing in value while it is sitting on your drive!

If you really want rid of it just weigh it in, £70 a ton.

Stick it on Ebay and some budding motoring enthusiast will buy it and stick a replacement engine in, or use it as a donor car for spares.

Hi! Thx for the responses! I would like to see the car go but I don't want to give it away. The reason I was asking for guidance on the price is because I am also considering advertising it in local free ads papers and have no idea what price I should ask for it? I guess my criteria for getting rid of the car are a quick sale whilst maximizing my return (gosh, I sound like some city banker or something :) ). Which is best, free ads papers or eBay?

Once again thx people!

Torch it while no-one's looking.

ebay every time!

Golden rules:

Start auction price LOW.
If you have a minimum you want for the car set it as the RESERVE.
A high start price will deter bidders big time!

Be 100% honest and take some good pics including any bad parts of the car.
Always write a decent listing with plenty of detail.
The more you say about an item shows that you know about it rather than someone just looking to make a few quid.
I always write my listings with a bit of humour, it always goes down well.

The only problem I have found with ebay is that it is VERY addictive!!!
Nissan Micra - disposing of? - Rattle
Should put that that to the test for my Fiesta see if I can get 500 quid for it D

*Badly repaired wheel arch patch
*Needs new camshaft
*Needs new piston rings
*Been trashed by a learner
*Seat trim falling apart
*Human assisted steering

:D

Anyway Micras are easy cars to sell, so I reckon you could sell it to a machanic for £200, and he then sort out the engine and sell it on for around £700 if the body is good.

There's a broken one on e-bay for £250.00 as we speak.

Thx everybody for your replies, particularly rattle and stuartl. The car in question is three days into a 10 day auction as we speak!
