Interesting to read about the new petrol engines, but the (even beefed up) 5cyl diesel must struggle?
Surely this car is crying out for the Ford/PSA 2.7L V6 diesel - or would that clash too much with Land Rover?

Yes, the 5cyl diesel does struggle... despite the 6-speed autobox doing its best.

The 163 bhp / 340NM version of this engine gave my brother's V70 D5 auto an effortless turn of speed and returned 45MPG (6.3L/100km for our metric readers) in the process.
The 185 bhp / 400NM (18% more) variant in his brand new XC90 D5 auto now works hard simply to gather momentum and returns a miserable 27MPG (10.4L/100km) in the process.
Whereas the V70 would surf along on a light trottle and wave of torque with hardly a gearchange required, the XC90 requires lead boots and continual auto box shifting despite that fatter torque curve.

That's it then - nothing can't beat the pure power of huge displacement.
So... to sum up: 4.4 V8 highly recommended.
