Peugeot 306 1.9 TD DHY Conrod failure - AK306
Hi all

2 weeks ago I had a conrod failure on my Peugeot 306 1.9 TD from 1998 with a XUD9TE/DHY motor.

When I searched on the Internet for an engine to replace it, I found the Car-by-Car Breakdown telling that this failure was not unusual:

"Spate of conrod failures on 1997 -1998 R and S reg 1.9 XUTD diesels; one case of a late reg T: too many to attribute merely to running with low oil levels. Seems only to affect cars built from April 1997 with DHY (not DHX) serial number engines"

So I (or the garage) will have to find an engine without this fault.

But I do not know which engines will fit my car. Is it possible to take an engine from a Peugeot 406 (DHX), or the older Peugeot 306 D8A? Does these 3 letters identify a unique motor or are there different DHY motors?

As far as I know, there is only one DHY engine. This replaced the older D8A lump in the 306 in 1997 and was used until mid 1999 when the XUD engines were displaced by the HDI units. Best bet is to search the local breakers yards for a decent D8A engine from an accident damaged 306 or Citroen ZX- you should be able to get one for around the £300 mark. I managed to find a replacement engine for my 1994 306 TD last year for £300- engine was from a 1996 P reg D turbo with 110k on the clock. Also had a 3 month warranty woven into the bargain. There were 3 I could choose from, all accident damaged 306's, but the chap at the scrappy recommended this D8A engine as opposed to the other two R/S reg cars with DHY lumps because of their history of conrod failures. There should be no reason why the D8A engine shouldn't 'plug' into your car.

Another benefit is the D8A engines dont have the troublesome Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve (for turbo engines XUD9TE). I would also go for one with a Bosch pump rather than Lucas injection pump. Unfortunately as the D8A engines are older, they are likely to have done more mileage. However, mines still going strong after 150K+ miles and 13 years on.

If your new engine has an immobiliser on the injector pump, you will have to bypass it, for it to work with your existing cars immobiliser.

The first offer the garage got for a DHY engine was 1.275£. Another offer for a DHX engine was 1.100£ both from the local breakers yards (which is in Denmark). The prices I have have found in Germany are just about 100£ cheaper.

We are also considering finding a suitable shortblock as the only damage is in the lower part of the engine.

I guess the old Peugeot with the D8A engine did not have an immobiliser? In fact the plan (if the whole engine was to be replaced) was to replace the injector pump from the new engine with the excisting Lucas pump in order to get the immobiliser to work. But you mean it is worth the effort to get the immobiliser to work with the new Bosch pump instead?

I have not quite understood what the problem is with the "troublesome Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve". But it seems like the D8A engine would be a reliable replacement.

My 1994 306TD has an immobiliser and when I had a replacement engine fitted, the bosch pump off the old engine was removed and fitted to the replacement engine, which had a lucas pump I believe. The guy said that was the only option in order to get things working. The whole cost for the replacement engine and fitting was £550. There should be no reason why it cannot be the same in your situation. Also spending over a grand on an engine you may just as well buy a new car. An old, but decent D8A lump from a scrapyard is still the best option in my opinion.

My D8A engine doesn't have an immobiliser attached to injector pump, nor does it have EGR valve. Replacing injector pumps obviously means replacing injector lines + injectors + timing new pump, more work, but what the heck, you have the engine out anyway. Swapping pumps from old to new shouldn't present any immobiliser issues. Bosch pumps are more suitable for running on veg-oil. EGR valves can stick, causing emmission problems.

I have a 306 DHY with conrod failure, i am considering fitting the older D8A engine, does anyone know whats involved to bypass the imobiliser on the pump or is it easier to swap over pumps?
Will the catalyst exhaust pipe suit this older engine and i wonder about emisions when it comes to MOT time.

Swop the fuel pumps over if you can, So much simpler in the long run.

Been reading through all the posts regaring XUTD conrod failures and I can assure the Peugeot owners that this problem is not isolated to Peugeot. I have a 98S Xsara that parted with one of its conrods at 80mph, yesterday. Guess which engine is/was in the car, yup a DHY!!

I have a 306 DHY engined TD that has done 128k hard miles without any such failure. There were thousands of these things made and not all are bad..

Well Razzle all I can say is your one of the lucky ones, my 98? R 306 with a DHY went bang back in 2002. Not long out of it's warranty, total bill including a new starter motor and air-con pump 3,400 pounds. Ended up running the thing until early this year to try and get my moneys worth, but it stung me another two grand during that time.

I still don?t like driving behind 98? PSA cars in case I get showered in engine bits, but I surprised that they are still failing.

This is that was left mine:

Its only the April 1997 to April 1998 DHY XUD9TE engines that fail.

A 1999 engine with a DHY code will be fine.
