£20k to spend!!!!! Hooray!! - fray bentos
If you've been reading my recent posts you'll know I need to get another car. I have up to £20k to spend but if I can get away with less I'll be happier. Trouble is, I like too many cars out there,coupes,cabriolets,sporty ones,automatics,luxury saloons etc. but mainly interesting, reliable, low depreciating ones!(if there are any!).Looking at new(hopefully with big discount)or recently used.Current favourites are VW Eos,merc slk,Hyundi coupe,Astra cc,BMW coupe,Mazda rx8,Focus cc,.Jag x type,merc c class saloon and coupe.I am in no rush and would appreciate any ideas on interesting cars that might fit my 'needs'. After all the nasty problems people seem to have on this site I thought it might be good to have a'nice'problem for a change! Thanks.

You won't get a decent spec Eos for £20K and you won't get a discount on one costing more.

Any Ford or Vauxhall will lose money very quickly, as does the X type (a Ford really!).

BMW Coupe has lower depreciation

Are new Minis still being sold at silly money many years down the line?

For info I had a similar budget to you and bought an A3 Sportback.

Bearing in mind that anything new, in your price band, drops about £5k as it goes out of the showroom, why not go for something you wnat but about a year old with the balance of a 3 year warranty? That way you save some money but have back up for a couple of years. I bought a car new 2 years ago and when the supplying dealer asked me if I wanted to do a swap he gave me the figures and I had lost 50% of the sticker price in that 2 years.

You would be a looney to spend 20 grand on a Ford.

Adam you're wrong I'm afraid. The correct spelling is loony;-}

I have thought about a new Mini,the're interesting and have very low depreciation going by the ridiculous prices of used ones,but inside they seem cheaply made(plastic made to look like chrome etc)and look like a fisher price toy car,too cute and girly in my opinion,if they beefed it up,I'd buy one.Most used fords and vauxhalls DO lose money but not it seems the 'specials'like the astra vxr and probably the Astra cc and focus cc wont either.New ones,no,but 1.5 year old x types for half price with manufacturers warranty seem a good buy to me,if slightly thirsty. Haven't looked at Audi yet! Thanks for your input.

Minis are stupidly overpriced. I have driven a few, and they are not good for covering long distances in - not a comfortable car. They also seem to pick up quite a few interior squeaks as time goes on.

Name me a car that doesn't develop a squeak or two after being battered by our appalling road surfaces. My Goodness, where does our £35+ billion road tax money go?

There was a lot of talk a week or two back about VW Phaetons for £20K... and I bet the V10 turbodiesel sounds great.

People seem to like these Minis but I don't much. Style over substance, seems to me. And if you're heavy footed, close-coupled cars have much quicker handling, not really desirable.

Not a bad idea,but it's only got a fabric roof like my MX5! My next 'open top',if I get one, realy has to be a coupe cabriolet with a metal roof.Have just been offered a 10% discount off an Astra twin top and its not even out yet,and sadly,there may be more discounts to come.
