Apologies if this has been done before but if so let's repeat it for a bit of fun. As it is a holiday weekend I thought it time for an opportunity to drop into Fantasy land.
Regardless of cost what car do you think is:
a) The best car lb for £ &
b) The best looking car ever built.
My attempt at this is
a) Series 5 BMW (lb for £)
b) Aston Martin V8 Vantage
|
Agreed, albeit not the current five.
|
Several of the Alfa Romeo range.
I also like the current Renault Megane coupe's styling.

What\'s for you won\'t pass you by

Most beautiful = Alfa 8c Competizione.
Best looking = 80's Aston V8 Vantage.
I'd be hard pressed to actually explain what I think is the difference between the two, but I know it's there. The Aston for instance, is certainly not beautiful.

Most with an Alfa badge, after that some of the Ferrari & Maserati badges. Some of the Lancia stuff.
I'd struggle after that, Aston Martin DB 4-5
|
I'd go for a strange one:
Range Rover (latest model)
or Maserati 3200

C6, ZT (not in a garish colour), 300C, AMV8, 240Z

Some people have strange taste! Though I kinda agree re the Megane Coupe.
300SL Gullwing
365GTC (not GTB Daytona)
456
MkI Lotus Cortina
New XK8
SL55
Too many actually .....

Here's my list of best looking ordinary boring cars, judged in comparison to their contemporary opposition. These were not necessarily good cars, just nicely proportioned, simple, elegant and timeless designs.
Ford 100E Prefect/Popular
Hillman Imp
Hillman Hunter
Rover 2000 P6
Original Range Rover
VW Golf Mk 1
Ford Escort Mk 3 (first front drive Escort)
Peugeot 405
For performance cars, my nominations are:
Jaguar C-Type
MGB
Jensen Interceptor

Agree with every thing you say ESAPECIALY Range rover1 BUT since when was the MGB a performance car?

And since when was it better looking than the MGA? (hi mm)
|
hello lud
Ah yes the MGA bset looking MG ever i wonder?
|
|
|
>> VW Golf Mk 1
Yes, very crisp lines, though I think the Mk2 was the most attractive Golf.
>> Ford Escort Mk 3 (first front drive Escort)
I still remember when this was launched, it was quite something in its day, styling-wise.
Is it just me or does anybody else think the original Audi A3 is one of the best-looking hatchbacks ever?

Very hard to beat, for all time, a 1939 Lagonda drophead.
Timeless designs from a more recent era:
- Triumph 2000 mark 1 (my preference over the Rover P6)
- Peugeot 205 5-door
- Audi A4 and A6 Avant, before they spoilt the design with that ghastly grille which reminded Jeremy Clarkson of George Michael's goatee beard (I think it was George Michael).
Thinking back to the 1950s I see what Sofa Spud means about the Ford 100E, though I'd put the (slightly similar looking) Austin A50 / A55 (pre-Farina) ahead. I may be biased because my first- ever car was an A50, and I loved it.
|
" Very hard to beat, for all time, a 1939 Lagonda drophead."
Taking it we mean the Rapide drophead coupe, agreed. The 1937 LG45 Rapide is more dramatic, though.
For a modern equivalent of the latter, look through

There's a nice Lagonda in Coys of Kensington display window, covered in plastic sheeting during building works... and a black label Bentley, and an immaculate Delahaye, and a lot of slick-tyred Can-Am Porsches, Lolas and the like parked in the street.
I've been trying to resist this but I can't. There are lots of beautiful cars actually, but off the top of my head I wd list: Any late 40s/early 50s Alfa saloon, preferably Superleggera bodied; Ferrari 275GTB4; Lancia B20.
Heavens, they're all Italian. Just a coincidence I'm sure.
|
Peugeot 406 coupe for sheer elegant simplicity at a price within sensible reach.
659.
|
|
Competizione, Superleggera
Even those hand stiched Italian words are almost and contain a beauty all of their own which the Anglo Saxon cannot hope to match.
|
Alfasud Ti- wonderful looks, even better sounds. no modern day car 9 for sensible money) has that wonderful exhaust rasp, more's the pity.
Agree the Golf Mk1 Gti and Pug 205 Gti looked fine with extra trim and subdued badging in just the right places.

I was in an Alfa showroom the other week and the new Brera is the most stunning new car I have seen for a long time. Might have to take one out for a test drive.
|
Surely we all know the best looking car ever is a focus saloon in a nice metallic biege!
Seriously though as a £ for lb motor the 406 coupe must be a front runner although the bog standard 406 dash feels a bit low rent.
|
Thank you
Seriously though, I really really want to say the Escort Cosworth. For both categories!
|
Agree with the Pug 406 coupe for the best looking in the £4£ category. Especially in china blue.
For the best ever, the E-Type Jaguar would take some beating.

Cisitalia 202
Bugatti Type 35B (racing one without headlights)
Lancia Aurelia B24
Alfa-Romeo Guilietta SZ (the cutest car ever made)
Fiat 500
Lamborghini Muira
Citröen SM (not beautiful but stunning)
Fiat Multipla : )
Can't think of any more at the moment.
|
And of course those super-stark early-fifties Ferrari barchettas, 1.5 litre V12 putting out 160hp, very very pretty little cars.
|
I love that look: it's why I like the Bugatti. No fuss, no drama, just a cigar with wheels! Beautiful.
