Lexus IS200 with 90,000 miles - GenevaJohn
I'm fantasising and looking at an IS200, year 2000, 90K miles, for 6,000 pounds with an one year warranty (being sold at a main dealer, near where I live in France)). Looks like a good deal, and insurance is reasonable (550 Euros fully comp.)

From a mechanical point of view, is this a sound long-term buy?? I know they're generally a recommended buy, but I'd like a nice car that I may keep for many years. In particular,do these cars stand up well to very high mileages(assuming service history is there). Any expereinces or comments people have, I'd appreciate it.

cheers

Yes buy it. Essentially, it's a Toyota, so engineering will be robust. IS200 consistently at the top of owner's satisfaction surveys in the UK.

The only thing I know about those cars is that around here they seem to be the current wheels-of-choice for the flash-lad with a few bob. They seem to offer just enough bling to make them stand out.

I have yet to see one being driven remotely sanely :(

I doubt these lads buy them new, but at 90,000 miles I'd say that in this part of the world you might be looking at one which has been a lad's toy. Might be different in France, though: I've no idea what presses the buttons there.

Just be aware that they are very torque-shy.
Revs (and revs) are needed for "progress".

beware, the autos are very sluggish and average 21mpg

I had one of these with the 6 speed manual box and 35000 miles when I got it. It was frankly THE most troublesome company car I have EVER had. Its true that Lexus service is the best I've ever seen, but it needed to be as the car spent more time in the garage than anything I've ever had before.
I had to have the following done :-
Full gearbox rebuild after 44000 miles to try and cure the chronic gear-shift problems in 2nd and 3rd.
Complete new clutch assembly due to seemingly incurable clutch judder.
Complete new set of alloys due to the original ones corroding at 18 months old.
I am not normally heavy on cars and have never for instance worn out a clutch before.
Also, the 6 cyl engine is smooth, but lacks any real grunt unless you rev it to death, and this causes very poor fuel consumption for a 2 litre.
Also, the paintwork is very fragile and prone to chipping.
I wouldnt buy one of these especially as they are quite expensive anyway, you are better off looking at an Audi A4 or BMW for the same money.

Obviously I will have to recommend the new darling of the Back Room, the Subaru Legacy.
My friend has a Lexus IS and despises it, but mainly for being ultra-dull.
I wouldn't fancy an A4 with that mileage, you are fast approaching things dropping off territory.

A Lexus with just 90k on the clock, providing it has been properly serviced, will just keep on going and going.

It is a premium brand for Toyota and I've driven 50k plus examples that have felt like brand new vehicles.
