p reg escort with the sidelights and dash lights not coming on .are there any known problems with switch on stalk or relays that would cause them all to fail. someone had recently fitted towbar and electrics with piggyback connectors which I think were wrong looking at the colours but now disconnected, just wondered if this could be the cause, headlights on dip and main work ok but wonder if both are sometimes on at the same time

Exactly the same problem on my sisters R-reg Escort (failed its MOT because of it). As the previous guy just said, it was the indicator/wiper stalks (they are one complete unit). Apparently a fairly quick and easy job to do. Genuine part from Ford dealer was £60 odd (plus VAT?), loads on ebay (patent parts) for around £30, I got a brand new patent from a local breakers for £35 and it works fine. Apparently these are a very common failure part on Escorts of this era. Good luck with it, hope this helps. Mark.
