I'm traiding in a 51-plate automatic Jaguar x-type 2.5 Sport with metallic, leather seats, climate, heated front screen and real park assist. Great condition. Checking Glasses, What Car and Parkers I'm getting varying views on the p/x price - anywhere between 8k and 9.5k, it seems.

I've been offered 9k by a local Jaguar dealer against either:
a 55-plate 2.2d Sport with leather seats and metallic with 7k miles on the clock, or
an 05-plate 2.0d SE with only 5k miles on the clock.

Both seem reasonable deals - do you think I could get any more out of them, and which one looks the best deal?

The 2.2d is a great engine, it is the cost to change rather than the p-ex price that is important and you have not said what the two d's are up for?

Have you driven a 2wd X-Type, they are fine to drive though with a less sporty handling set up than either the 4wd X-Type or the Mondeo 4/5door that they are based on (the X-Types all use a rear suspension set up based on the Mondeo estate so as to accomodate the 4wd system).

I could certainly live with a 2.2d Sport estate though!

19K for the 2.0D SE
20k for the 2.2D Sport

Both nice cars - to be honest, I couldn't detect an enormous difference between the performance of the two. 2.0d was fine, the 2.2d was a bit more fun. Drive was wildly different from my current 2.5 4wd - much more boring, but then I will halve my petrol consumption. If currently pay £200 a month on petrol, so that goes a decent way to paying for a new car!

I'm leaning towards the 2.0d because it's got all the bits. But there-again, for 1k more I get another 6 months waranty and a bigger engine. Difficult choice!

Most shocking of all I was offered only 7k by another Jaguar main-dealer for a similar 2.2d Sport, but this was registered in May 2005. A bit odd, given the 2.2 wasn't released until September - I asked the dealer if it was a prototype and he changed the subject!

Having had both, albeit in a Mondeo, the 2.2 is a definite improvement over the 2.0 and is well worth the extra grand. The 2.2 doesn't feel much quicker because the 2.0 gives you a good shove into the seat when accelerating anyway, but the powerband is wider, it will pull from lower down the rev range and it is noticeably faster when pressing on. The 2.2 doesn't give full power and torque in first and second gear to prevent traction problems and protect the gearbox - whilst this slows it down a little off the line it does make it much easier to drive at slow speeds in congested traffic - the 2.0 tries to run away a bit at times.

I actually get better fuel consumption from the 2.2 as well, I suspect the extra torque means you don't need to push it as hard at day to day speeds and hence it is more frugal. The 6 speed gearbox possibly helps as well, but that only comes into play at 60mph+.

Well carrying on from Quinny100's post you could save a fortune with a Mondeo, same engines and have a really sporty drive. I do like the X-Type estate though.

No, it must be the snob in me, I like the Jag! I don't think the mondeo would be that much different - the difference in drive is not so much that its 'less sporty', more the difference in feel between a 4wd and fwd. I never thought I would notice the difference, but you do. I drove an Audi A4 S-line (the sporty version) - I had the same feeling there. Nice car, but you just don't get the same 'feel' and confidence as with 4wd. If you put your foot down a bit hard whilst pulling away you can feel the wheels scrabbling to get a grip slightly. Similarly, accelerate whilst turning the wheels and you can feel the front wheels trying to pull away, not something you ever feel with 4wd. I'd buy a diesel 4wd if they did one!

Back to the original question, it would be the newer 2.2 for £1k difference for me however I think I have seen 05 2.0d's for a fair bit less than £19k though again it is the cost to change that is important not the screen price and another dealer may give a much lower p-ex.

As an admirer of these cars, I'd choose the 2,2, just considering the selling on again, aspect. It's more than likely to be the one most people woill want, in the future.

Is this the dealer that you are a customer. already? This could be why you're getting a higher offer, than the other garage.

& don't forget, you can always try yet another dealer, for their offer!!
