96 bmw 318is coupe fuel consumption - adam f
my car has become a little juicy compared to what it used to be. is there any recommended additives i could use. i am a bit sceptical about adding these to the engine as there are so many on the market and i dont know much about them.
i dont drive the car hard and very rarely take it over 3000 revs.or maybe there is something wrong with the engine??????? any advice would be very helpfull

Have you done any of the obvious things like check the air filter,plugs etc additives are waste of time and money.

additives wont make any difference



i have a 200 318ci...same engine as yours.
i recently had the DISA valve changed...it has made a big difference to the fuel consumption....it would have definately gone on your car...because of its age...
also the crankcase breather valve would need replacing as well(£10)
both of these affect idling and fuel consumption


also check the air filter is good and that the housing is not blocked

im almost sure you have a disa valve..... :)

Some of the oil additives might be a bit dubious, but fuel additives usually make a difference if the problem is dirty injectors (Especially Forté products, apparently available at ATS outlets) so might be worth trying?

The fact that you keep the revs low is actually not that good for the engine in the sense that it can lead to the injectors getting a bit clogged up, take it for the occasional "italian tune up", ie warm engine, 3rd gear and high speed, road and weather conditions permitting.

Try adding some REDEX injector cleaner and change the air filter. If all that does not work then it requires spoecialist attention, by the way does the engine warmp up properly? Your car should do on average some where between 30-35 mpg.

as my car is the e36 model it does not have a DISA. it is due for a full service shortley and today i have pumped up the tyre as they were a little low, but not to much. any more suggestions guys ????????
