Mk 4 Golf Rear Brake Pads? - Andrew Moorey (Tune-Up)
Jack up and support rear of car. Undo the two 12mm bolts securing the caliper to the carrier. Release handbrake and disconnect cables (important). Now it gets fiddly. You will need a wind-back tool which rotates the piston clockwise whilst it pushes the piston back in. You can fudge it with a pair of long nose pliers pushing on the piston whilst rotating it until it is all the way home. Make sure that the cut outs in the head of the piston are orientated so that the peg on the back of the new pad will engage into one of them when you refit the caliper. You'll see what I mean when you get there.Take out the old pads (hammer and chisel!) Wire brush all the rust and scale off the caliper carrier so the new pads are an easy fit in the carrier. Sometimes need to remove the paint from the edges of the pad, apply a little copper grease to contacting surfaces and refit the caliper with the new bolts supplied or put a little thread lock on the old bolts. DONT reconnect the cables yet. Pump the brake pedal around 10-20 times to make sure the pads are snug against the disc. NOW you can reconnect the cables. You'll probably find the handbrake is a bit 'long' but resist the temptation to adjust it until you are sure the new pads are fully bedded in by which time the handbrake will have probably sorted itself. The lever needs to return fully off after every application.
Hope I havent missed anything!
Andrew
