Having just been quoted £85 for a new battery for my Previa does anyone know if those "battery aid" additives you see in motoring shops work?

No they don't.

IMHO £85 is too much for a Previa battery. You only need a 70 amp one, last week I bought a Bosch silver 60 amp battery for £35.20 inc VAT from Costco.

If you are not a member try to get someone who is to get one for you. Don't mess around with the old battery it will let you down on a cold morning just when you are a bit late.

If the connection terminals are the same, get down to your Vauxhall dealership and purchase a "GO" battery. Cheap as chips.

Oddly enough, you'll probably find that the tyre dealer who gives you the best deal on a set of boots will also be the most competitive place for a battery. All you need is one of the correct rating with identical terminals and a size that 'fits' the space in your car. Batteries are not vehicle-specific as such.

You should be able to pick up a perfectly decent one for around £30 - £40

Although batteries are not car specific, some cars, like the Mk3 Ford Mondeo and Focus, have an intelligent charging system and fitting a standard lead-acid battery may result in an explosion under the bonnet, due to the higher voltages sometimes incurred. The Mondeo is fitted with a Silver-calcium battery and these should only be replaced by the same. Check the type (chemical make up) of battery you have fitted and if going for a non-OEM replacement then make sure you fit the same type. I you're not sure, safest bet is to go for the silver-calcium one.

Try somewhere like Halfords with a 3-year warranty.

EDTA (the active ingredient) added to a battery DOES make a difference, removing sulphation, but it is not worth the risk in a car if you want 100% reliability IMHO.
I used it on my old Triumph batteries over the years but the battery was really only needed as a voltage regulator.
Permanent magnet alternator and simple electrics.
Also used it in my BMW K75 and extended life of battery for a few years.
