Audi 80 E-reg, cat puzzle - Robble
Hi

My father has an E-reg Audi 80 with a blowing exhaust. He took it to an exhaust place and they told him he needed a new system including catalytic converter. My father told him the car didn't have a cat and that he must have been looking at the wrong model. The bloke told him it was definitely the right car and my father took the car to an independant garage who also say it has a catalyst.

Now I thought you couldn't fit a cat to cars without fuel injection and lamda probe, ECU etc to measure the oxygen content in the exhaust and adjust the mixture accordingly?? This car definitely has a carburettor, however there is definitely also something round and cat shaped in the exhaust system.....

Any thoughts? Since the car is quite old I presume it doesn't have to have the cat fitted?

cheers
Rob

hi robbie
the car could still be cat equiped with a carb it was done by a few makers but not req'd til 1992 ish or it could have been an
added extra at customer request if there is a system without a cat for it it will be cheaper also some audi/vw front pipes have a silencer that looks like a cat but i dont think 2 garages would get it that wrong

gsf list a cat for a carb on an 87 plate i didnt know that either,so thats the first new thing ive learnt today, why it would want one beats me though.

Is this car UK spec? Is it a rhd model?
I once bought, quite a few years ago, a 1981 passat with a 1.6 EZ carb engine that was equipped with a cat. It was just classified as an unregulated cat. Cars in germany with a cat qualify for road tax discounts, thats why many german manufacturers put them on as standard, so dont be surprised to see one!

The fact is that, as an E plated car it doesnt need a cat to pass the MOT. Suggest you shop around for a non cat exhaust - it might even run better without it.

good point, but also might run worse with a reduced back pressure.

Some of these Audi 80's had cats long before '92. They used to have a big sticker in the back window saying "Schon mit Katalysatortechnik" ('already fitted with catalyst technology'). They were what is know as U-Kats (Ungeregelter-Katalysator - "unregulated catalyst").

Just fit a standard system - will be a little less back pressure, but shouldn't make any difference to running of the engine.

Unregulated cats started in Germany in 1985,most people bought them and paid little or no road tax(it depended on what level the car complied with) and then bought a non-cat system which they fitted to the car.The cat exhaust was then only refitted for the TUV test(MOT).

Well thanks for your comments!
The car is a RHD UK model. I think my father will try and replace it with a standard exhaust if he can find one!

thanks

Oldman

Why would it run worse with less back pressure? I would have thought it would run better with less resistance in the system for the exhaust gases to escape?

im glad someone asked, in the seventies i tried various exhausts on different cars mainly fords i admit, but with no back pressure some cars had no get up and go until they were wound up but with the factory exhaust fitted with both boxes as was the norm in those days the cars were more responsive lower down in the revs, dont ask im not an engineer but ive always found this knowledge has bade me well with the cars ive had,a good example is the chaved up cars of today with their drain pipe exhausts fitted you can tell straight away that they are down on power compared to a factory tuned set up.

discuss:)

You know oldman you may have something here. The number of times I have 'taken' a chavved up Corsa in my completely standard Focus is huge. Ok I have a bigger engine, but for Mr Chav obviously the noise is the most important thing!

I would say that was right!

Chav cars will be gutless and no-where near as economical (especially with those stupidly swollen body kits).

'cos sticking a big exhaust on will tune your engine!!
