OK so I've got the easy bit done, I've chosen my new car, now I've got the hard bit to do, getting rid of the old one. I don't actually need the money to buy my new car at all on the other hand I'm not going give the thing away for less than it's worth.
Now I know a Rover 45 isn't the most desireable car in the world ATM but I reckon I should be able to shift the thing if I sell it well and find the right avenue.
I'll give you the specs on the car, no picutres right now as I'm going to finish making it look beautiful before I shoot them and I don't want this to seem like an advert. Ok specs:
1.8i XLS 16V, 52 plate (registered January 6th), 5 Door Hatchback, 29K miles, Copperleaf Red, Service History, Air Conditioning, Alloy Wheels, Electric Windows (Front), Power Steering, ABS, Average Condition, 12 month MOT and 6 months Tax.
I see my options as:
1) Part-Ex it, I've had £3750 offered by one dealer, and can get £3500 from most.
Pros: Quick, clean, nothing to worry about and it's not my problem any more.
Cons: Least amount of money for the vehicle and it only works if I end up buying my new car from a dealer.
2) Sell it at auction, I think I would see the least money from this as I think the Rover 45 is unlikely to be a successful car at auciton.
3) Selling it privately (Autotrader or similar), The Glasses valuation comes in at around £5100 but looking at Autotrader they are selling for around £4000-£4750 depending on spec and condition as mine is one of the higher spec ones I think I should be closer to the £4700 end than the £4000.
This would give me the most money but is also the most hassel and I'm not sure how much I would acutally get and then there is the cost of running ads and subscribing to sites.
4) Local, Friends, Collegues, I'm not very keen on this idea but it could happen. I have managed to sell a car before to a co-worker and it worked out very well but the potential to go wrong is large and I don't fancy this at all.
5) Something else I haven't thought of yet, please suggest.
What's the best way to go about getting rid of this car for the most money?

> looking at Autotrader they are selling for around £4000-£4750
autotrader miight tell you what people are asking , you sure it tells you what they are selling for ?
|
Well I admit I am guessing but I would imagine that most cars sell for within around 15% of asking price assuming that the asking price is reasnoble to start with as long as the sale is done well.

They may asking £4000 plus in Autotrader but how many actually sell at that price, not many I think.I would take the dealers money in this case as I do not imagine they are on the top of most peoples most wanted cars list.

Put it on eBay with a reserve, or put a really good For Sale notice in it and just drive it about as normal?

P/X it and get shut of it - you really don't want to be stuck with the car for what could easily turn into weeks. Apart from things like the insurance complications and the coat of advertising, it'll get difficult to sell as Christmas approaches and its value will be dropping all the time.
|
By the way, I noticed your comment "give the thing away for less than it's worth".
It's worth what someone will pay - this *may* be a lot less than you think it *should* be worth, but such is life.
|
£3750 sounds a very good offer from the dealer - I'd take it if I were you.

Cover the Rover badge with a Skoda badge

Take the dealers arm off for £3750. In fact take a leg too whilst you're there, it will help him with his benefits claim once his sales manager has finished with him.

Mark99 if you read my post you can see I made a distinction between the part-ex price and the sale price (i.e. via a private sale). The price I gave for part-ex was around ~£3500 with one dealer offering £3750 which is very close the the figures you quote.
However I would expect it to raise more through a private sale.

Private sale isnt going to get you much more than trade imho. Are you meaning main dealer retail asking price inc warranty ?
Good luck with the £5100, you'll need it. Have you seen the prices of new rovers recently?

My next door neighbour had his mint x-reg mgf for sale in Autotrader, Exchange and Mart, Cardata, sign in window, etc for £4900 since April this year. Fsh and had the important head gasket done. Didn't get a single punter come round to have a look. In the end he got fed up with it and pt exed it last month for £4500 on a new touran.

You are trying to sell an 'average' example of an obsolete model with the wrong image from a bankrupt manufacturer.
I'm afraid the punters are hardly likely to be queuing up, whatever price you ask. Your opinion of what the car is worth, and its true value (ie what someone is prepared to pay you for it) may be miles apart.
Realistically, if you don't take the £3750, you are risking being stuck with an 'orphan'.

there's actually considerable demand around for "cherished" MGRs if only because the brand new option is no longer available.
It strikes me you should;
1) advertise head to head against the dealers on AutoTrader (cos that's where the punters look first)
2) haggle for a generous trade-in
3) keep your MGR, 'cos it's considerably better than anything you can buy new, and will not depreciate as much!

Sorry? did i read that right?

I can think of 2 possible explanations for this posting:
1, It is a wind-up.
2, Patpending has never driven a modern mid-range car, such as the new Golf or Focus.

Trade it in.
If you get a clean £3500 for it, that may be a few hundred less than private sale but you get rid!
|
Another vote for trading it. The only time I wouldn't is if the car with the high p/x offer is gratuitously overpriced and you therefore get a low offer against a competitive deal.
If you've already done a competitive deal on the replacement then if you get over £3,500 then I wouldn't put myself through the hassle of selling it on because you might have to wait a long time before you end up selling for a pittance over the current trade price.

If you've been offered £3750 by a dealer I would do it !
I think even £4000 for a private sale for this car is unlikely.
People can put what they like in Autotrader but it doesn't a jot unless a punter actually wants to pay it !
