4 x4 - tracey
Is a 4 x 4 mitshibishi pajero or shogan (3 door models) expensive to run, petrol and parts etc. Does anyone out there own one of these vehicles and have any good advice?
Re: 4 x4 - Tony
Real world fuel consumption V6 petrol 20-23ish 2.5/2.8 diesel 24/28ish depending how/where you drive.Parts a little pricier than ordinary cars but not excessive and many specialists dealing in cheaper parts for these.Insurance reasonable from Tescos,Tyres from about £40 a corner, again shop around. To save any unforeseen bills, get an inspection done b4 you buy as these are a'specialist'vehicle.Overall these are great vehicles, but make sure your buying one for the right reasons or you could be dissapointed. For my money i would always buy the best Pajero i could find.
Re: 4 x4 - Piers
Check it isn't nicked if it's an import (Pajero is Jap name I think). Apparently there is a big issue with them being stolen in Japan and 'laundered' through the middle east. On the TV prog I saw there was a desert full of nicked 4x4s waiting to go to Britian.

If you are concerned about fuel consumption/running costs, then take my advice, Steer clear of anything 4X4, petrol or diesel.

Ever thought about a Freelander?

Why should she ? Tracey doesn't sound like she would make such a ridiculous move.

Tracey, if anybody ever offers you a Freelander, make sure that they are offering you enough money on the part-exchange - about 40,000 pounds ought to be enough.
Re: 4 x4 - Netpilot
Mate at work just handed his Shogun 3.5 5-dr petrol back to the finance company cos it was too dear to run. £600 for a major service and expensive parts. Apparently they're very hard to work on.
A great motor though, but the diesels are far cheaper to run.
23mpg is wildly optimistic.
Re: 4 x4 - Hugh
Unless you really need a 4x4 (towing, serious off-roading etc) DO NOT buy one - they are a totally ridiculous choice of vehicle for 99% of drivers. I am a farmer who manages perfectly well with a red Citroen van - I probably get stuck about twice a year but think of the money I save!
Re: 4 x4 - Richard Hall
Hugh - get some Colway rally tyres for the driven wheels of your van. I had a pair on an old Alfasud a few years ago, and it would go anywhere.

Tracey

First off I'd agree with the sentiments above - unless you really need a 4x4 don't buy one. There seems to be an impression they are 'safe', but frankly they basic limitations of the weight and high Centre of Gravity mean, in my view, that you're more likely to have the accident in the first place, as handling and braking are compromised. This is from someone who owned a RR for a year.

Also they are unecessarily expensive to run.

However, if you are determined, don't get the Shogun Pinin. I had one on rent a while back (no, it just arrived - I was expecting a Mondectra) and it was the most uncomfortable drive of my life. The car was constantly bouncing - you could see the gear lever bouncing up and down continually as the engine/transmission moved on its mountings. The Corsa felt like a limousine when I handed the Shogun back.
