I have a T reg 1.8 diesel, occaisionally during acceleration the engine hesitates, similar to missfire in a petrol engine. Looking through the rear view mirror there is signs of black smoke. The problem seems to occur at the same engine speed. Typically 25-30 mph in 3rd gear.
Has anyone any ideal what may be wrong.

is it a turbo diesel? The puff of smoke could be the turbo kicking in.
Either way I would reccomend running some injector cleaner through and getting it up to limiter in 3rd to blast away any build up. Also if its due a service then make sure its a full one, all filters, oil etc.

Thanks for the info.
It's a straight diesel - no turbo, and it has just been serviced:- oil, filters etc. I will try some injector cleaner.

I tried injector cleaner, this has had the effect of producing clouds of smoke from the exhaust at the same time still hesitating. Then coming home from work today I noticed a peculiar light knocking sound eminating from the engine compartment when accelerating. Has any one any idea what might be wrong or is it terminal!!!. The car has done 106,000 miles.

Could be an injector "hosing"-ie.sqirting not spraying.Go to a diesel specialist and enquire about having your injectors serviced.
