drum brakes - vauxhall cavalier - cavi
does anybody know whether the weights on a drum affect the balancing of the rear wheels? i'm asking as i have dicovered that one of my drums were badly scored and as a quick fix i went down to my local junk yard and got one off of a cavalier not too dissimilar from mine but the'new'one has weights at designated points on it and mine hasn't. are they there to counter act any imperfections in the drum or are they there for another reason? looking forward to any suggestions as what they are for.

Drums as wheels/tyres need balancing. But usualy once a drum is balanced it will be ok for any motor, exceptions apply if the drum has been involved in an accident distortion can occur. But assuming it has not been involved in an accident. The blocks are there to balance the drum and rarely effect wheel balance..Anyone correct if wrong?

hi steve'o the car i took it off didn't have any apparent damage and the drum doesn't seem to be distorted so on saying that i'll go see if it has affected the ride thanks for replying.

Along the same lines it is worth having the rear wheels balanced,an imbalanced wheel can throw an adverse load on the wheel bearing.

Drum will be perfectly balanced anyway. so wheel unless balanced on car should be ok..All you really need to do is mark where the wheel is removed.Possibly a chalk mark on wheel next to wheel stud so its put back as removed.Should not be any further complications.I will just add make sure the drum has no lip on outer section where shoe comes into contact. It will prevent true adjustment of rear brakes/fitting

The wheel will not be balanced unless it has been balanced, irrespective of the drum.My point was that, while many people only balance the front wheels to avoid vibration at the steering wheel,it is also worthwhile to balance the rear wheels. There is no point in marking the position of the wheel on the hub unless it has been dynamically balanced(on the car).
