Anyone know whether it's possible to rent (say) an S-Class or Bentley for a 3 day week-end? One catch: I'm not going to pay more than one sixtieth of its purchase price!

Try your local MB/Bentley showroom! Look smart and plausible and ask for a test drive. A useful excuse is that they are handy for your office but you live some distance away and the missus willl insist on seeing the car before you can place an order. No, she's busy on Saturday and can't come then.
This technique has yielded the following for me:
SLK Friday to Monday
745i 48 hours
996 Carrera 24 hours [though I did have an order in ;-) ]
530d 24 hours
Offer of a Cayenne S 24 hours
X5 3.0d 24 hours x2
Maserati 4200 Spyder Saturday to Tuesday
together with no end of accompanied test drives.
Now, I was serious and in the market for all of them except the 745 (which they were desperate to shift), and an S-class/Bentley might be a bit harder (!), but there's nothing to lose.
