A follow on from Schoolboy's'worst car',what is the best car(s) you have had?Could be the most reliable/economical or just one that gave you a good time or brings back fond memories.
I'll start with an Anglia,it was the 1200,such power,I was a teenager,it was my first car.I thrashed it without mercy until the three bearing crank snapped one day.Undeterred I rebuilt a Cortina engine and dropped that in.Eventually four of us drove it to Morocco, sadly KLE 625D never made it back, but that's another story.
Another vehicle that sticks in my mind is a Renault 20 TS auto,it was supremely comfortable,no doubt designed for pave(should be an accent over the e)and went like a rocket on kickdown. It was fairly straight forward for a Renault of the period, although they managed to negate the usefulness of the hatchback by having some bizarre rear seat pivoting arrangement instead of simply folding down.

Peugeot 309 GTi Goodwood - limited edition complete with full leather, wooden momo steering wheel and gear knob and a unique colour scheme.

Handled fantastically, went like the clappers and just ever so slightly rare!

The best car I have ever had? I havent had it yet. ;)

The best car I have driven tho will suprise some people.

The car I learnt to drive in,

A Mk1 Ford Escort 1300XL. What a cracking little car. Not complex, no power steering nothing fancy like that yet it was as sweet and pure to drive as anything, lovely gearbox, steering, ride, handling,

That was in 1973 and it was a 1971 model.

1998 MX5 1.8 - one of the first Mk2 models.

Not a sophisticated car, but brilliantly designed, fantastic to drive and very easy to use all of its 140bhp safely and enjoyably.

Great car, and great owners club too.

My dad had a 1300GT, '69 on a "G", basically the same as the XL, they both had the rectangular head lights, though the GT had a twin choke carb (75 v 65 hp) and neat dash with four extra dials to the right of the speedo/revcounter.

Oh, the "best car I have had" was a Dolomite Sprint.

A 1998 Mondeo 1.8LX - 94000 miles not a single problem (touch wood!)

1990 Cavalier SRi. 200,000 miles on the same clutch, and the same engine. Excellent performance, economy, handling, comfort and load carrying capacity. Let me down once- the coil went. Other than that, never saw the inside of a garage other than for timing belt change. All other servicing done by me (no mechanic!).

Mazda MPV. Not remotely interesting, but if you want interesting you don't buy an MPV I guess.

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Its ok for long motorway trips, or equally capable if loaded up with the kids or my sailing kit.

Not a single fault in 31,000 hard miles. Only downside is the relatively low levels of kit - no cruise, climate, or leather option available.

1964 Daimler SP250. Never smiled so much before or since than when driving it. The car I most regret selling. So much torque that you could gently let in the clutch at tickover and it would pull away smoothly.
On the lookout for another this year or next.

My current Corsa. But then it didn't get much competition from the other cars I've owned.

No prizes for guessing....

'89 Ford Escort Bonus

Never had a mechanical breakdown yet, which is doing well for a 16 year old car. Can get 55mpg on a long haul from the 4-speed gearbox. Retro-fitted heated windscreen is a gem in the winter, as are the 3 different keys: I can leave the ignition key in the barrel and lock the doors when warming the car up. Best "hybrid" of old and new technology IMHO: Electronic ignition needs no adjustment whatsoever and only 3 sensors to fail, and I can rest assured that the carburettor won't suddenly go into "limp home" mode.

At the moment it'd have to be my Alfa 145 cloverleaf. Lovely little car, put a smile on my face all the time.
It could possible be supplanted in my affections by the Coupe, but it'll be a long process I think, and she's definitely not there yet.

Toyota Celica Mk5. Still own it as 2nd car. Superbly engineered and a delight to drive with performance and reasonable economy. 108000 miles now and never failed me. Sounds good, looks good, in bright red but not worth that much to sell -- yet --- perhaps one day in the future value will rise. It just feels like it will last forever. Have to keep polishing though -- Red!!!

Fiat 124 Sport - hired for 2 days.
Lovely twin cam engine revved like mad and was a boy racers delight. Wooden steering wheel, alloys/sports seats.

No problems - only 2 days use - wonderful memories passing everything with 6,000rpm and lovely exhaust noise.

No doubt rusted away in 5 years...

BMWs and Mercedes, Lotus Elan.. can't touch the memories...

no question - Honda Legend Coupe. Effortless power, comfort, style, all the toys, totally reliable and 30mpg. Should never have sold it. If anyone knows of a really nice one for sale, i'm intertype7@aol.com or 0033 555 03 29 38...

Nissan QX SE Auto YOM 1996. Utterly reliable no breakdowns, service items only replaced during 5 years of ownership.
Quiet, refined, comfortable and relaxing. A bit boring, but not a bad place to be sitting if you've got a long drive ahead of you.

Proper Mini! Had a 1992 Mini, 1275 carb engine nothing too OTT. Always started first time, great fun to drive, cheap to get serviced etc. Will own another one, one day!

Best car you've had - Big Bad Dave
My old XJS just because it?s as close as I?ve come to fallng in love with a car.

Or my current 605 which has given me so much and yet received so little in return. In 6 years never once coughed, chugged, spluttered, fail to start (apart from battery at end of life), failed to deliver or let me down in anyway whatsoever. In return I?ve given it the scarcest of servicing or washing, the minimum of affection, barely a sniff of oil... in fact, I?m going down to the garage to give it a big kiss. Met the current Mrs Big Bad Dave in it too (while still with the X Mrs Big Bad Dave) so it?s seen a fair bit of hanky panky. Happy days...

1995 Primera eGT. Bulletproof, doesn't go wrong, only service items required, pulling well with 165k miles under it's belt. Still on original engine, box, front shocks, wheel bearings etc etc.
Handling on it is excellent as well. Just a minor pity that Nissan hadn't sorted out their rust protection in 1995 so unfortunately, despite it being an excellent car, I shall be parting with it. And I shall miss it.

subaru impreza wrx STI. in black mica
the fastest, sure footed car i have ever owned.
just the sound of it send shivers up my spine
1 bad point, petrol, used to drink it like it was going out of fashion ;-(
even if you have to blag a day driving it from a dealer, just do it, you will have a smile on your face for the whole day and thensome!

Ive owned 11 cars in the last 7 years and without a doubt the best was my 1990 (G) Vauxhall Astra GTE 2.0, It was only a 8v but the acceleration was outstanding, If only I could have found a decent 16v one. I suppose the chances of that now are virtually zero, as all mk2 astra arches rust like nobodys business!

Anybody who has driven a GTE will never forget it, a truly rewarding experience, and the best thing was i only payed £220 for it!!

85 Polo 1.3 Formel E. Totally sentimental reasons. First car after graduating. Was 10 years old- but looked immaculate- close friend even checked number plate as didnt believe was that old. Only had it for a few months. As soon as I got a 'proper' job replaced it for the ZX that qualifies as my worst car.

Not the most exciting car in the world- but got a lot of fond memories of this one.

On a sensible note current Mondeo is an excellent car- but will I miss it when it's gone? Probably not- yet still have very fond memories of the VW nearly 10 years after selling it.

I nominate several:

1) My Rover Mini Cooper (1990), my first car after leaving uni and getting a proper job. Brought a smile to your face on every journey. Still own it, although it is in storage currently.

2) Subaru Impreza Turbo estate. Fastest car I've owned. Glorious noise from flat-4 engine. No air-con and heavy thirst counts against it.

3) Best All Rounder = Saab 9-5 I've just sold, it did everything well (although did nothing brilliantly), Fast; comfortable, practical, reliable etc., the Volvo D5 I've replaced it with might take over its mantle due to better economy (although performance is down slightly).

4) Best 'Dark Horse' = Although not technically mine, I did drive the vehicle in question for the duration of one summer as a student. It was my father's 1990 Peugeot 406 'Style' saloon. A bottom of the range Special Edition, but it was only 6-months old, and was painted an elegant grey colour with the Mi-16 bodykit, so looked anything but.
No electrical windows, mirrors or steering. The engine was the 1600 with twin choke Solex carb, 0-60 10sec dead, and it rode on 165 width tyres. The throttle response was fantastic and the performance more than enough for someone used to a one-litre Metro. The legendary 405 handling was amplified by the excellent unassisted steering and narrow tyres. A wonderful motorcar.

1991 VW Corrado G60. Owned it for a year, 1992, and sold it just before new tyres and a service were due.Oh and the insurance renewal quote had just doubled the premium. A good time to swap the car (for a Polo Genesis Coupe IIRC)
Superbly comfortable and stable to drive , never ran out of grip and went like a rocket. No problems at all.

I wasna fu but just had plenty.

V6 Mondeo, just shades Focus Ghia. Focus would probably have won if I'd bought a 2 litre petrol instead of the TDCi. Brilliant cars in the real world, you really don't need any more.

SWMBO's A6 probably better but I never get to drive it.

It has to be our Xantia 1.9 TD. I drove my wife and friend to Manchester airport yesterday (about 90 miles) and, after the recent service and two new Avon tyres on the front, it is driving as well as ever. It isn't as quiet as it used to be at 80 mph but one can still have a conversation with passengers without raising one's voice.

Toyota Corolla! Surprise?

Actually it was the AE86 GT Coupe, the rear drive one with live axle and limited slip diff. It has (it still exists) the most delightful 1600 cc motor, full of revs, and it was great fun around the back roads. As acquired it was on Toyo tyres and a bit of a menace in the wet, but a set of Yokohamas made it just entertainingly tail happy. One of my nephews had it for years after me with much satisfaction, but ultimately the dreaded tin worm attacked and it has now gone South for rebuilding.

If they make a really good job they might even be able to swap it for a Supra, now any decent fast bit is the likeliest place for a spiteful trap.

Must be getting old!

1, My current '00 Subaru Impreza Turbo ('Classic shape'). Do I really need to explain why? Thought not.

2, '93 Rover 216GTI. Effectively a re-badged Honda Concerto, with the 130bhp twin-cam Honda engine.
Handsome, spacious, quick, economical and 100% reliable. Excellent cars, in a completely different league to contemporary Escorts and Astras.

My present car, a BMW M3. A fabulous machine to drive, awesome acceleration, absolutely stable on the Autobahn at (an indicated) 270km/h, best brakes on anything not made by Porsche. Docile enough to use as daily transport, acceptable running costs and it has 4 seats which allowed me to justify buying it.
