Been thinking about getting one of these and they seem to be graet little cars. Fast, cheap to run, well built etc. Only drawback I can see is the Skoda badge which doesn't bother me at all. Can anyone else suggest why I shouldn't buy one?

Naff seats with Vrs logo all over them.
|
Handling at the limit not quite as good as Fiesta, 206 etc. But then who really drive at the limit most of the time? I'd have one over the competion in a flash.
|
I actually quite like the seats. But I can see why some wouldn't!

Topgear did a comparison with a mini cooper round the track - the skoda did not handle as well as the mini but it still beat it quite easily.
Oh and 50mpg!

Looked at a new one of these vs a Seat Leon which was bigger and cheaper. The Leon won however on the size issue - bigger boot ! Other than that both are great cars.

Might be worth you doin a Forum search since I think it's been discussed before? Good cars BTW - I've wanted an Octavia but SWMBO will not let me have one!
-----
Im not plain stupid, just a special kind of stoopid.
|
Interestingly I have been thinking about the Leon. I guess it would be bigger and be a little more refined but not as much fun. The cupra would be good but its grp 16 insurance and 25mpg average. The fabia would have as much in gear performance in the real world. i quite like the 130 PD Se but they are still quite dear.
|
So that's it then apart from the seats and on the limit handling there is nothing else that should stop me.
That has reassured me thanks

Although it's top of the range in price & performance, it's not as well equipped as an Elegance 1.9TD which is cheaper. There is a fair difference in the driving experience.....
Skoda dealers are very happy to talk about discounting these, I've heard mid 10k for a brand new one.
And anyone who still thinks Skodas are rubbish hasn't been in one of the new ones - our Fabia is just excellent, don't miss the New MINI Cooper at all.

Well, as I picked a new VrS up last week, I think I can comment on this ....
PROS
-Feels like a bigger car
- solid build quality
- amazing mid-range oomph (and I've only driven 450 miles so far....)
- easy to drive around town
- on first tank I've averaged 49pmg (not gone oever 3000 rpm)
- long-legged on motorway - 3000rpm is almost 100mph !
- insurance group 9
- looks great (I think) in silver
- has as much kit as I need
- good dealer service (Horners, Bury)
- seats our family of four in comfort
CONS
- a bit small
- wife doesnt like chug-a-bug diesels (tough ! I can drive it then ...!)
I'm not remotely bothered about the badge issue. I know a good car when I see one or drive one and this is one cracking little motor.

A guy I worked with had a vrs diesel. He had it chipped - quoted figuare was 165 bhp - but I think it was probably running more then that (most vag diesels run more than stated power). It felt amazingly quick - low - nid range torque was excellent. Even with a super chip on it - he still could get 60 mpg plus on the motorway. Around town - never got below 40 mpg, when driving hard. Up to 50 mpg quite easily.
Surprised an early model DB7 up till 70-125mph acceleration too!
He also mentioned that handiling was ok, not very adjustable - a bit nose heavy - as vag cars tend to be.
You could always improve that with a suspension kit.
Seem to old their value well too.
I know there was a seat ibize cupra diesel - that had 163 hp standard. Imagine upping that to near 200 hp!!
|
I drove a fabia VRS from Browns in High Wycombe. Lovely car - looked great in black and pulled very quickly. I also actually quite like the 'chugging' noise of the engine - was quite endearing.
But the interior?!! It is hideous. Those seats are shocking. I enquired about leather upgrades but there's nothing at all on the option list... The dash also looks very cheap.
I ended up buying a 3 series BMW (used) instead. But I still think about the vrs - maybe next car - although I'd have to try and find someone breaking a fabia elegance and buy the seats and sub them in...

The power/torque figures may be great, but it's still a diesel and it'll still wake your neighbours up in the morning with its agricultural clattering when you start it up!!
|
The noise does put me off a bit I must confess but the economy and performance make up for it. Does anybody have any views on the Ibiza TDI sport. Going to look at one at the weekend. I have heard the fabia is more refined and better built but I think I prefer the Ibiza's looks a little.
|
A side note - they're bringing out a new Polo later this year which has some absurd BHP rating - might be worth checking out/waiting for?

Will probably have an absurd price tag to match too

in the region of £14.5k I've heard.

>>Does anybody have any views on the Ibiza TDI sport.
I've driven both the vRS and the Ibiza and IMO the Fabia is a much more comfortable drive especially on the motorway and is set up well enough for press on driving when you fancy it. The Ibiza feels rock hard, very bumpy or should that be sporty? My daughter in-law has a standard Ibiza 1.4 petrol and even that crashes over every bump which I find tiresome. The Fabia interior and dash doesn't look or feel as good as the Ibiza's but that wouldn't put me off.

Have you discovered the forums at www.briskoda.net ?
Someone there once posted some photos of a Fabia with a custom leather seat job. It wasn't cheap though! See tinyurl.com/8drhf
I've had a more humble Fabia for exactly two years and would consider buying another. If I did more miles, I'd be looking to trade up to a TDi but I'm not sure if I'd go for the vRS. The seats would be an issue but so too would be the behaviour of other drivers towards hot hatches.

Madness. We all have our tastes but if you pay 14 grand for a Polo, you really are crazy. I don't care if it has twin turbos, an emerald steering wheel and diamonds for switches!
Pretty much like my mate who paid 17 - yes, seventeen thousand pounds on a....
...Fiesta. Ok, it was brand new and they specced it up but come on!
Great cars yes.
Worth 17 grand? What do you think?

£17k for a fiesta does seem a lot! Do the people on here with Vrs find that they attract much attention from other road users? I see them as being fairly subtle and a bit of a Q car. Would be surprised if they attracted people trying to race you in it

One of the reasons I bought my VrS was it's understated looks. Unless you know about it's performance potental there is not too much to give it away.
To me it just looks like a smart little car, nothing more, nothing less.
After two weeks ownership I haven't noticed any difference from other drivers/people to when I drive my other car - a Subaru Outback.
I think to say the Fabia attracts the boy racer brigade is a bit strong - all the other drivers of VrS's I've seen have been similar to me - early 40's, not bothered about flash bling image, but enjoying a fast frugal car ......

One thing that never ceases to amaze me is the long list of optional extras that are available with all Ford cars. This doesn't seem to apply to many other manufacturers. It wouldn't take many ticked boxes on this list for the price of some new Fiestas to escalate to around £17k.

£17 on a Fiasco? I think not.
£14.5k on a Polo? If it performed like a Cooper S, might be worth considering. Not for me but then I drive a gold car so I've got no taste.

My brother's just bought a new one of these, and having spent close to 500 passenger miles in it it seems very impressive. Seriously quick if in the power band (2 - 4000 rpm), and very stable and quiet at high speed. Suspension seems a good blend of firm sporty with some compliance - it certainly doesn't pogo around. Interestingly, I think boy racer types are aware of the potential of it since he has recieved some attention whilst driving it. Most amusing when giving mum, dad and grandma a lift - he had to let a badly modded 106GTi roar off into the distance!
Not a huge fan of the style of the seats or interior but that's a personal thing, overall I'd say it's a great little car.

No, honestly, this is what our car looks like - ours is an Elegance so has alloys but you get the idea with the colour.

Think we saved a least a grand by going "Blingy"

Careening over the median and off topic....so
Shame they don't do the VRs in gold...
Just noticed that this one, a comfort, has black rain channels on the roof. Ours has the fully integrated gold colour ones.
IIRC, the VRs also has colour co-ordinated rain channels.
