Rocker box warmers? i.e. Ford's OHV - mfarrow
Hi

With all these problems of blocked breather tubes caused by condensation in Fiesta engines, has anybody ever tried insulating the roker box to keep it warmer in cold weather and hence reduce condensation leading to mayonnaise?

If so did it work and what material did you use?

I thought that the HCS engine did have an insulated rocker cover. The reason was to reduce noise, but the same insulation would act as a heat shield.
Back in the 70's a mod for the Viva / Chevette range was a plate attached to the head to protect the front of the rocker cover from the airflow.
The problem is, if the engine doesn't get hot enough for long enough to 'vent' the water vapour, the oil will do it's job and mix with the condensed water vapour, causing the 'Mayo'.

i used to have an escort with that engine...i made up a little plate to partly cover the rad grille in cold weather

also be aware that once you do have mayo its very hard to burn it off on a long run, so clean it all out at oil change time

I think it would be better to tackle the issue of inadequate crankcase ventilation, rather than using insulation or baffles. I don't think an adequately ventilated engine does get condensation in the valve cover even in cold weather, unless it only ever does very short runs.
I remember from Mini/1100 days that merely enlarging the small hole in the engine breather pipe was one good improvement.

Should not need to if thermostat is working correctly?.
