How about a BX 16V or (stretching the hatch bit a bit) a CX GTi Turbo 2?

MK2 XR2,
Not quite as fast as the 205 GTI but a great hot hatch all the same. The rounded off square features were great IMO.
The Mk3 XR2i, although a superior car, did not appeal to me as much.
I had the 1.6i 309 SRi. The 205 GTi with the 309 bodyshell.
They probably sell for peanuts now. If you see on for sale, I can highy recommend them!

BX 16V - faster than the contemporary BMWs except M3 and M5. Comfortable, roomy and economical. Luvverley.

Early 80's - Ford RS1600
Late 80's - Pug 205GTi (BX too big to count although superb drive)
Early 90s - Pug 309GTi/Golf II GTi 16v
Late 90s - Honda Civic VTEC
