Two questions!

1) How do you get info on how many of a particular car are still on the road?

2) How many Ford Escort XR3i hatchbacks 1983-86 are still going?

As always, any help greatfully appreciated.

After a more difficult than anticipated search, I have bought one. Totally standard and in good condition.

I now await my crucification by the forum....my last request is to have a Burberry Cross and a eulogy by the "yeh, but no" girl from Little Britain........

Well from a personal stand point I always thought they were (and are) a pile of poo - BUT

There cant be too many left that have not gone rotten or were thrashed and crashed to death.

If its in orginal and and in good nick, and has those rather nice alloys on it, then

Good luck to you, grudgingly I have to say some original ones should be saved - so no crucifiction from me!

My poor car!

I think like Burberry, the car is a victim of stereotyping of the owners. In magazine reviews of the time, the car came out well.

I must say, that I think the only way to carry off driving a car like this without getting ridiculed too much is to do the following:

1) Keep it clean, standard and in immaculate condition.

2) Dress smartly and do not wear an football top or "chav" clothes.

3) Do not drive like an idiot and be even more polite and courteous to other road users than you normally would do.

That will confuse everyone!

Enjoy it Retro.

Cannot go as far back as you but have have a Sept 1989 Xr3i
that I got as a 6 month old Jersey import and has been pampered for it has now been claimed by SWMBO and instead of reading Excort at the back letters should be arranged to Tesco - the shopping trolley.

Sailed through its test last April no probs.

Take it out now and again to clear its tubes and will still do well in excess of NSL on a cameraless stretch of road at Police shift change over times.

Number still on road approx 3000 Exc Cabriolets.

Cannot give exact figure as it would have to be quoted hourly due to joyriders.

How do you know that by the way?

Also as an aside, went to Leicestershire to the Coldwar Jets Collection the other week. Friendly bunch of blokes and a fascinating place.

I have an escort of a similar mark (well, Mk4, but same body I'm led to believe), and in my experience the one place to look out for in terms of rot is the point where the rear wheel arches meet the sills. Rest of the sills and car are 'fine' but here they're litterally flaking away. Cause of problem: water from drain holes in the rear quarter windows (3-door) running off the inside of the wheel arches, down to the sill. Not a water "trap" I don't think, but less well protected than maybe it should have been.

Thanks for that, I will check.

Original '83 RS1600i is the one to have, 115bhp, solid lifters, finned alloy rocker cover etc etc.

I hate to correct myself, but after looking the other day, the rear quarter window does not have drain holes. Rust may therefore be due to corrosion at meeting point of outer and inner wheel arch. Water may creep in the sill that way and cause the damage.

ok, I admit it, text speak really really annoys me. I don't even write it when I'm sending an SMS text.

More, I consider using such a written form outside the SMS environment to be lazy, inconsiderate, impolite and disrespectful. At the least it gives the impression that you are not prepared to put as much time or effort into writing your message as you would expect me to put into reading it. This would imply, and therefore I would infer, that you consider your time to be more important than mine.

It isn't. Even if it is, you shouldn't behave as if it is. And you certainly shouldn't do it when its late at night I have two barking dogs, a crying 2 year old and an 8 month pregnant wife who appears to be blaming me for something which happened last July; which seems a more than little unreasonable.

Beyond all this, is the use of the word, or at least what I take to be a word, "ov".

Using "ov" instead of "of" must be about as dumb as it gets. Its not shorter, its not easier to type, it doesn't sound more like "of" than "of" does. What on earth is the point ??

I know, I know, calm down and focus on Motoring; but is it so unreasonable to wish that we showed a little more care towards our language and the communication we indulge in when using it ?

Or do I have to admit that I am not the real slim shady and buy a Victor Meldrew t-shirt instead ?

Hello.

Original Sierra's are getting sought after.

I myself have considered a cosworth but i think it would cost a lot to run.

I keep seeing mk1 Ghia's and Gl's that have had one owner all there lives.

Text language - this was taken from Sniff Petrol that summed up my and many other's thoughts beautifully:

Letter? E-mail? Memo?

Whatever you?re writing, why not render it annoying and incomprehensible with ?TXT SPK???

Yes, from an informal note to an important business communication, there?s almost nothing that can?t be made to sound like the syntactically inept burblings of an emotionally retarded 12 year old with TEXT SPEAK! Why use the word ?to? when you could move your hands off the letters of the keyword and up to the number ?2?, thereby saving yourself the massive effort of having to type an extra letter AND making you look like an ill educated, snot dribbling moron in the process!

English is the proud international language of business, shipping and aviation. With TEXT SPEAK we can reduce it to the grunting, vowel-less, comma free, lower case lingua franca of the relentlessly stupid!

I wonder how long before those online language translation services add "text speak" as a language.

There should be a mint 50k ish H plate black turbo, around East Anglia, still, 'cos the guy who now owns it rang us last year (from our number plate id) asking about it's history.

He was surprised at how nice it was when he bought it, from the people we sold it to, mid 90's. Would you believe, young couple, her pregnant, first baby & new house & buying one of the most expensive to insure, hot hatches at the time!! I even remember them walking around & inspecting the car, with a clipboard & checklist!

They didn't, at first, believe it's condition & low miles 42k, either. This was due to it's second owner, buying it & promptly getting a looooooooooooong drink driving ban, having hardly driven it!!

Got some pics somewhere, it WAS a first class example, washed n waxed every weekend & not moving!!
