Trying to fit new rear pads to P reg xantia 1.8 estate.
The disk runs much closer to the inside edge of the caliper, almost touching it, while there is a decent gap on the outside.
Caliper piston is fully retracted but there is not enough space to fit new inboard pad. The problem is the same on both sides of the car.
Anybody got any ideas?

You do have the right pads? Estate rear pads are different....

Have a good look at the calipers - almost certainly you will find they are not square to the disc / arm. This will be due to corrosion building up between the trailing arm and caliper. Remove the caliper and scrape / file the corrosion off. Go steady with the caliper bolts (get some heat on them first) as snapping them off is not unknown. If you go carefully you should be able to do the job without disconnecting the brake pipe.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Corrosion is the problem for sure. I did my sister's Xantia a few weeks ago. The alloy caliper reacts with the steel backplate and 'grows' a great wodge of corrosion on the back - forcing the caliper round at an angle, so the disc contacts it eventually. You wouldn't believe it until you get the thing off and see it for yourself!

I managed to get the caliper unbolted and gently turned round without disconnecting any fluid pipes. I then let rip with the angle grinder and took it right down flat again (you should just manage to get a grinder wheel in.) A file might not be man enough for the job if things are bad. I coated the back of the caliper with plenty of copper grease and reassembled. It's now good as new.

Just be careful not to damage the pipes as you move the caliper away and don't nip them with the grinder. It also says in the Haynes manual to put the bolt back in that normally locates the pads to stop the caliper separating when it's unbolted. There didn't seem to be much fear on ours, though.

Apparently the C5 is even worse........!
