What are the wires that run to the wind screen washer jets for? Heaters? How do I know if they work?

Hi

I've got a Mk2 Gti 8v (1991) and there aren't any wires on my windscreen washer jets, just the hoses. There's also no mention of any wiring in the haynes manual, there's an image of the jets showing how to remove the hoses when taking off the bonnet, and the wires don't appear in either the image or the accompanying text.

Where or what are they attached to (at either end)? Is it some earthing device, perhaps a bit of DIY by the previous owner covering up a dodgy conection somewhere else? Or an aeriel for an alarm perhaps? Or even wiring to make a circuit for a bonnet opening detector? I'd be surprised if they were for heaters, as surely the hoses are as likely to freeze? I have never seen wires like these, and can't think what use they would have outside of the wild guesses mentioned previously. So my post is, to all intents and purposes, useless. Still, it's written now, so I'll post it anyway. Sorry to not be of any use.

Apparently they are fitted to golfs from 90-92.

My 5 door mk2 CL did not come with heated jets, but I fitted them later. I had to cut the bonnet to get them to fit as they were longer than the non heated type. I wired them in as per Haynes book which I think (but I am not certain) was to be on when the ignition was on, jets and wiring were obtained for a brakers yard.

Yes, the washer jets are heated... I suppose you can feel the temperature to see if the water coming out is hot.. I THINK they are connected to the heated rear windscreen switch rather than being live all the time. If you have (or know someone with) a multimeter, you could connect it to check

Do you know if all mk2 Golfs had these fitted? As stated above, they're absent on mine. It's a GTi, so I wasn't expecting to see too much left off of it equipment-wise.

Blue LEDs?

I don't know if they all had them fitted, Matt, mines an '88 Gti. I've just been looking at a site called GPC www.gpcvwaudi.com and they list them as a spare part at £8.00 each. Maybe someone's removed them from yours?

It was one of the differentials between the three and the five door Matt: The Five door also came with alloys as standard and they were optional on the three. A marketing man's way of making you think you hadn't just spent the extra cash on two extra holes to use to fill the car with children or elderly relatives.

both of my 3 door Drivers (not gti) have had this, one with the early wiring and one with the later '90 spec' wiring

Yep, mine's a three door, hence no heaters in wash nozzles.

I think as ed said..probably wires that connected LED`s. my Nephew had them installed on his GTi. He took LED`s off but left wiring in place. could not be bothered to remove wiring. Wiring also went into dash around radio?.
