mondeo TDCi Vibration under load - NeilT
Hi,

My '04 Mondeo TDCi 130 has now covered 12,500 miles, and going in for it's fist service on Saturday, but i'd like to find out if anyone else has had similar problems before I start getting the garage to investigate.

When it was new I could sence a slight knock on the steering when taking up the clutch at a junction, or sometimes when stopping, a friend in Ford Service told me there is a new design of bolt that gets fitted to Mondeo's with this fault, but wait for the service.

Since then, while in France the last few weeks an irritating resinance/vibration has made its self known between 1500 - 2000rpm. The one at 1500 is normally under heavy throttle in a higher gear, espeically up hill. It made it's self known in the Alps when using 3rd and 4th gear, 1500rpm is the point at which the torque build up, and so was labouring, more starting to pull hard.

The second one at 2000rpm is more on half load, e.g, cruising on the motorway at 75mph in 6th gear. This vibration can be stopped by slightly changing the steering angle, e.g, changing lanes.

This got worse over our 3000 mile trip, and makes using the low down torque very uncomfortable.

One last question for Mondeo TDCi owners....... Do you find the car a pig to drive around town when the air con is on?? Mine stalls easily, and generally feels heavy to drive in terms of accelerating.

There have been problems identified such as this one on the fordmondeo owners club website.

One further point - would stay clear of any garage offering to give you a "fist service" as you quoted ;-)

I'm sure we could find some web links for that too, but let's resist that urge.....

Neil - you may find my post of 10/08/04 useful, as I did yours. We endured the vibration/resonance for 6 weeks and 3500 miles round Europe towing a caravan, after the second attempt at fixing it. I've got the steering knock too! Please see also my post of 09/08/04 re seat comfort. I'd appreciate your views on the seats. These are excellent cars - mine is a 53 reg O4 6-speed LX model - but let down by these relatively minor annoyances. Regards, Graham

I think my Mondeo (TDCi LX 2004) has the same problem with an unhappy vibration at similar revs. However, as I am moving jobs, I'm also getting a new car and the Mondeo is a bit too big to buy again. I find the seats are not very comfortable and hark back to the days of my old Escort (1994) or 306 (X reg). I'm probably going to end up with a Golf (02) Diesel instead. As a 35,000 miles per year driver it has to be a comfy car, as it is my second home!!
