Hiya,

I am looking at changing my car.
I have a 96 N reg Saab convertible, 2.5V6 manual.
Its a lovely car, had it for nearly 6 years now, but its racked up 124k, and is looking the worse for wear....

The roof is sagging cos the hood has come unstuck from the glass rear screen, and it has several minor dents and one not so minor scrape on a rear wheel arch.
Also, it hasnt had a dealer service for 30k... just DIY oil change, sparks, filters etc... so no stamp in the book since 95K or so.

The question is what to do with it... do you think any dealer would want to take it in PX... I have my doubts.
Should I try and flog it privately,
should I have the bodywork done (perhaps 4-500quid) before I try and do anything with it...

Any advice?!?

It could be the subject of a new tv series, you know where they paint your house in magnolia and get rid of the Cortina on bricks in the back garden to sell the house - same thing with cars. A day down the panel beaters and an industrial size tin of Back to Black. Look out for all the channels to be doing one soon....

You can't be sure if I'm joking, can you?

Spending £500 on bodywork will have little effect on the value, but 'may' improve its saleability.

Given your description, would anyone want to buy it at any price?

Well yes, thats an excellent question, and I really dont know!
Thing is that it still drives great and is completely reliable, and the bodywork apart from the scrape and a couple of dents is fine and looks great all cleaned up, and the interior is nice.

Surely a reliable V6 convertible with leather has to be worth something to someone... ho hum... what to do....?????

There are parts of SE London where such a car would be classed as a bling-tastic status symbol. Why not see what a dealer will offer you so you (and the backroom) can have a giggle? Once you have a valuation, you have your reserve for an eBay sale.

"Given your description, would anyone want to buy it at any price?"

Most certainly, all the faults mentioned are cosmetic and I bet you can't see them when you are in the car with the roof down.

For what its worth I would rather buy a car with a few knocks and original paintwork than one which has had repairs as you don't know how severe the damage was before the repair or the quality of the repair itself.

Thats very true Trancer... driving the car is still a pleasure, and with the roof down, wind deflector in place and CD playing, I am proud to drive it despite the knocks!

My girlfriend doesnt want me to change cars cos she loves it so much... thats how "beat up" it is... but in the eyes of a dealer.. it would need work to sell it on.
Shame she's too young to get affordable insurance for it, else I'd just pass it on to her!

I think you may have found a keen buyer for your Saab "young ladies choice" convertible.

Farmer Giles is right, such a car has deep street cred, tarted up it would easily sell on a car lot down Tooting, try flogging it in areas like that, or put it on ebay with a very honest description and a very high unrealistic reserve and see how high the bidding goes.

That 900 is worth £3,500 all day long. Tart it up, lose the rest of the service history, wind it back to 80k (optional) and stick it on the lot at £5,995 no problem, in the right area. Of course, if you can bear to sell it while we've still theoretically got some summer left, it will get more again.

Mike Brewer does indeed do such a series - called Wheeler Dealers i think with Ed China (the guy who made the motorised sofa and grass covered ice cream vans) doing the repairs. It's on Discovery H&L sometimes.
