1982 Ford Granada-Fitting new shocks - RichardP
Hi,
I have acquired a full set of Monroe shocks to replace the rather tired ones on my 1982 2.8 mark 2 Granada Ghia auto. I'm just wondering if anyone has any tips or advice that might help? I will be doing the job on my driveway using a normal car jack (and supporting the chassis on wooden blocks as well). Will I need spring compressors or any specialist tools apart from the basics like sockets/spanners etc? I will have a look in my haynes manual when I get it back of a mate, hopefully by the weekend! Thanks.

it is straight forward job rears are dead easy but you have to release trim near back seat
fronts are not bad but you have to use a chisel to open bottom of strut to release it from the caliper
easy job but you will need spring commprssor tho
good luck

1982 Granada-new shocks, odd noise!? - RichardP
Hi,
Further to a post a few days ago, I have tonight fitted a full new set of Monroe shocks to my 1982 Granada saloon. All is fine apart from a strange thump/banging noise from the back when I go over larger bumps/small potholes. Now, I did struggle a bit to tighten the top nut at the top of the shock inside the car's boot as turning the nut just turned the top half of the shock! I tried to clamp the threaded top part of the shock (inside the car boot) by using molegrips to try and stop the shock from turning. I reckon I need to tighten the top nut more and compress the large top bush a bit as this could cause the bang on larger bumps. Anyone got any ideas what the noise could be? How can I stop the shock from turning so I can try and tighten the nut more?? I am certain the bottom nuts on the shocks are tight, but will double check tomorrow.
The ride is much better now, the shocks on the car were stamped 1982!! Thanks!

Top of the shaft should have a sqaure shape to it.it will enable a spanner to be used on it to hold it whilst tightning the top nut.dont try using mulgrips or the like to hold shaft below arch.Damage to shaft will mean new shock absorber.some use a key without the sqaure.would look at top of shaft to see what it is.ie is it star shaped or I think hexagonal.check this out first.prob is usually top nut not tightened down enough.?
