wheel nuts not tightening. Megane. - squibsquib
Once again i have a new prob with my megane. ( think they should be renamed migrane!) Anyway, i took the wheel off last week, and when i went to tighten the bolts they just kept turning and never totally tightened. would using a tap to chase the threads work?

I assume you or someone has stripped the threads. Do not drive the car anywhere. Remove the nuts and examine the nuts and the studs. The studs are usually of a much higher grade steel than the nuts so it is usually the nuts that fail. Do you use a torque wrench to do them up usually. Assuming it is the nuts then obtain new ones and torque them up to the recommended torque and off you go. Figures vary but 65 to 75 ftlbs is common.

Wheel nuts or bolts ?

Either way, as Peter says, don't even think about driving the car.

If you can't tell what/which is stripped, then get someone else to look at it. As the car stands its potentially lethal and could lose a wheel.

I've just re read SquibSquib and he does say bolts. Surely he must be able to tell which was stripped. The hub is cast so it softer whan the bolts. Now that is going to be a lot more expensive. Regards Peter
