yes it's me again.
ive now got this problem all the time now, these are the symptoms:
1. i can somethimes smell diesel inside the car with the engine running. ive checked the exhaust for leaks - none found.
2. ive been told that it misfiring possiably because one of my injecters has worn out or is beyond its useful life. how do i tell if its worn out & in need of replacing??
3. it now smokes on acceleration, quite a bit when its cold, but it gets less as the engine warms up, could this be related to item number 2?
4. ive had the diesel leaked fixed, it was leaking from the throtle shaft seal.
5. its now running on so called "cleaner diesel", but it was misfiring before the change, so ive ruled that out
6. ive tried changing petrol stations, no difference to misfiring or the smoke.
7. ive replaced the fuel filter & checked for water getting into the fuel. both have got no problems.
any ideas before i start shelling out money on parts that i might not need?

Hi
I would take it to a garage and have them look at it like the cable

I think FD has a point.where are you going here intake cant leak diesel should be direct injection.leak would be on the drip pipes from injectors to fuel tank ie return fuel to tank. air intake is seperate.Take it to an expert dont do it yourself.

Hello.
It just saves a load of time if you get an expert to do it as if you fiddle around you may break something or make it worse without knowing whereas a mechanic such as a ford mechanic would find the fault and remedy it quickly.

1. I'm not sure if you mean diesel exhaust fumes or diesel fuel smell. Both could smell the same if it's running really badly. It could be fumes from diesel leakage on the hot engine or gases leaking from the engine if it's got a ring or valve fault. Fumes in the cab as i'm sure you know are very dangerous and this needs attention ASAP!
2. Miss-firing either caused by low compression on one or more cylinders, faulty injector(s) or air in the fuel. Air leaks are common after disturbing fuel filters.
3. If the smoke reduces when hot it suggests either low compression or a faulty injector.
As always with any engine fault check the basics before you think about spending money on new parts or having them reconditoned... compresson, valve timing, injection timing.
It's possible to start the engine from cold and then very carefully, slacken each injector a quarter turn. On any cylinder that isn't pulling it's weight the revs won't drop very much. Wear goggles and have a rag positioned around the injector for safety when doing this.
It really needs a compression test but you could check that all the valves have some clearance as a starting point. A burnt out or improperly seating valve could be the cause.
Might be best and to get a technician to look at it as others have said.

..check that all the valves have some clearance as a starting point..
Sorry ignore this, ford diesels have hydraulic tappets
doh
|
As a simple, cheap test just in case it helps, have you tried using some injector cleaner? £5 from Halfords
|
|
No- earlier Ford Diesels like the Endura have shims n Buckets and I was going to suggest valve clearances as well, sniff!

Sorry to steal your thunder Andrew!
I was thinking the Endura was a sort of dieselised cvh engine with it's hydraulic tappets. Doh!.
|
ive tried the injecter cleaner idea, the redex one & one called diesel magic, which is suppose to be very good.
i did'nt do anything to the misfiring, if it was to have a computer engine tune up, might this help me located the problem?

Sounds a bit more serious than usual probs.would suggest having it looked at by someone that knows.think it was suggested before.if you don`t could cost a lot more to sort out.longer you leave it costlier it gets.dont take my word only my opinion

|
Unfortunately the only electrical items are the stop solenoid and the glowplugs so a Tune-Up wouldnt be much use. I suggest the same as Mech1, time has come to take it to someone who knows what they are up to. If you are within an hour or so of Brighton (Hove, actually!) contact AutoMarine Diesels in St Leonards Road Hove.Otherwise trawl Yellow pages.
