I have a 1997 VW Passat 110 TDI saloon with 126K on it. In the last 5K or so miles I've noticed a crackling on the radio at motorway speeds, but not at lower (town) speeds. It didn't do this before. The crackling increases in volume when the volume it turned up, and decreases on turning the volume down. Any clues?

Check the earth strap to the bonnet first but I would suggest it is worn brushes on the alternator. If you have the alternator with a push on connector you could disconnect it and go for a run to try it out. If that is it then a new regulator/bush pack will fix the problem. Regards Peter

I had this on my 406 soon after I bought it. The radio had a crackle which changed with speed. I found out what it was by accident when I changed a front wheel - the brake pad wear indicator wire had been wrongly routed and was touching the brake disc. The insulation had worn through and exposed the wires. The other side was just as bad. Once repaired with insulation tape and re-routed, the crackle stopped.
