I liked it, the coverage from ITV was better than last year, perhaps its because Ferrari are winning that you don't like F1 at the moment ?

I enjoyed it. Full marks to Alonso for that crackng start and then holding 3rd for the race. Coulthard (who I really wanted to do well this year) continues to disappoint ...

Me too (again!) but he doesn't seem to get the breaks, or the right car at the right time. I think Montoya has the best realistic chance against MS, but isn't that Williams UGLY?
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - Oz
I have no criticism of the coverage, and it's clear that the Ferrari formula was streets ahead of the opposition under Melbourne conditions. You can only admire a team who is re-writing the record books in the face of artificial changes to the regulations which were designed to impose a handicap on them.
It's just the fact that, putting Ferrari aside, there was little else of excitement.

Tend to agree with you Oz. Little excitement and not worth my efforts to avoid all news broadcasts until 1400.

Superbikes last week was much more entertaining with some real buttock clenching moments (and the lovely & knowledgeable Suzi Perry).
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - Chris - nearly an ex-pat...
Dullest thing I've ever seen, and very ominous for the rest of 2004. I used to respect Schumacher and Ferrari, but because of the one-sideness of the last few F1 seasons, I'm actually starting to dislike them. The red cars could have easily lapped the entire field if they had tried, but because of the new regs and the requirement for one engine to last the whole weekend, the drivers backed off 20 laps from the end. If they had been pushed or challenged, they could have lapped most of the field TWICE over.

I think most of the advantage Ferrari had in Oz was due to "trick" tyres from Bridgestone. Michelin had better catch up and fast.

Really, Bernie & Max and all the other F1 movers and shakers had better be careful. If this season starts to look like a re-run of the 2002 "redwash", then they could see the biggest collective TV turn-off in history.
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - El Hacko
boring and dreary for me, too - to be entertained and even thrilled, you need genuine competition plus the occasional surprise, not predictability...and how very sad that UK's McLaren team cannot get on the pace.
sorry but F1's had its day - I look forward to whenever they televise world rallying, where there are real thrills.
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - Armitage Shanks{P}
World and British Superbikes will soon be back and then we can all watch some really competitive racing - lead changing twice per lap instead of twice per 'race'!
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - Cardew
When the best driver is in the best car with the best tyres we can be sure there is not going to be much competition at the front of the field.

The only time it gets exciting and unpredictable is when it rains. Perhaps we should water the track or better still put down a few gallons of that nasty smelly diesel!
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - russbif
Why don\'t they make the first race of the season the one at which they decide which is the best constructors car? then make twenty of them and race the pink fluffy dice with different drivers, sealed engines, transmission, suspension etc, then the world would see who was the best driver, maybe it would be Schumacher??

Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - El Hacko
Or... are some of us (including me) just getting old and becoming more intolerant? No damn it, F1 IS too predictable!
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - martint123
MS should do what Rossi did in motoGP - get fed up with the snide remarks about only winning because he was on the best bike - leave the time and join one with lesser performance. We'll see how his riding will bring the bike and team on.
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - Altea Ego
MS showed he was a great driver BEFORE he went to the prancing horse, in very "unquick" cars.

Still boring this W/E tho

Wave goodbye to DC this year. No one will want him for next year. Good solid technical driver but no racer.
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - teabelly
I gave up on F1 a couple of years ago. Unless it rains it is dull beyond compare. If I bother to watch it then I am asleep well before the first pit stops and usually wake up about 5 laps before the end just in case someone falls of the track in a last minute attempt to liven things up. I also detest the fact that there are advert breaks during the race. I much preferred the bbc coverage, none of the inane chatter from watsit in the studio and celebrity interviews and other hooey.

I just watching touring cars (live coverage on Motors TV) and rallying when I remember. Motors tv also cover events like Le Mans and Bathurst and all sorts of european racing.

Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - Maz
Le Mans is infinitely more interesting to me than F1, and is surely more relevant to the development of performance cars, but coverage on the terrestrial channels is close to non existent.
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - carl_a
I can already tell you who's going to win at Le Mans this year because its the same team that have won for the last few years, Le Mans is boring.

What is going to happen at Sepang

Will Bridgestone tires still be better because of the heat ?

Will the Williams cars be much faster when they are stuck behind other cars ?

Who will win as this wasn't a great track for Ferrari last year ?
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - NitroBurner
I too think driver swapping cars would be a good idea. Don't suppose it will ever happen, but I reckon MS would still win the championship...
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - Maz
Sorry carl a, but that's nonsense. Bentley won last year, Audi the year before.
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - carl_a
The Bentley is an Audi with a top on.
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - Maz
In that case I fancy Fiat for Sepang and just about every other Grand Prix this year.
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - carl_a
I fancy VW for the win at Le Mans then :)
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - smokie
Le Mans is made up of more than one class all within the same race, which is one of the factors which make it exciting. Much much faster cars running around the same track as Porsches, at the same time.

Team Bentley admittedly had some Audi influence - when I tried to talk to the engineers at Sebring last year, I couldn't find an English speaking one!

There is a lack on interest/investment in sportscar racing, probably because as Maz says, there is little exposure on TV. A few years back BMW, Toyota, Mercedes and plenty of others were all represented. I believe it was some tinkering with the rules which was the straw that broke the camel's back for these guys, and they decided to no longer participate.

However, if you find Le Mans boring (which I can assure you it isn't), at least it's not boring 18 times a year...!!
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - CM
The one good thing about F1 is that all the cars are on the track at the same time.

I used to think that WRC was better to watch but after about 10 minutes of seeing single cars pass a few trees, do a hand brake turn and jump up in the air, this gets a bit repetative. All you do is look at a stop watch.

Shame that the BTCC is not what it used to be!
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - BazzaBear {P}
Actually, BTCC has improved greatly again the last two years, and this year, with even more manufacturers taking part again, should be better still.
The only thing it's really crying out for is decent TV coverage. At the moment it's a choice between Motors TV, where the commentary is a bit weak, or ITV, where they play it three weeks later, possibly, if they can be bothered and there's nothing else important to put on.
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - Kuang
Woo - another season full of three hour games of 'follow-the-leader'.. be still, my beating heart ;)

Incidentally, did anyone notice that the cameras seemed to be giving an artificial sense of speed? Not sure if it's because they've gone digital and have variable compression across the frame, but as a car went off the side of the camera the motion seemed to get jerkier and therefore looked a lot faster. When a camera tracked a car, the movement seemed more realistic. Might just be a fortunate conicidence, but it still caught my attention ;)
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - frostbite
Did anyone else find the "new and improved" on-screen graphics a little on the tiny side?
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - Morris Ox
Like a few people on this thread, I didn't watch the race. Dialled up the result on Ceefax at 7am, told me everything I needed to know about how tedious it had been. Schumi is a phenomenal driver but I'm afraid I'll never forgive him for taking Damon Hill out to win his first title. And I'm now getting really suspicious about Ferrari's relationship with the sport's authorities. Year after year of winning like this just doesn't add up.

Someone mentioned Renault's phenomenal starts. Their 'starts' actually started with the way they have interpreted the rules about traction controls, as their tech director has admitted.

So there it is: F1 is too expensive, too complex, too tedious as a result.

I'd like to think rallying would be a better spectacle, but they fiddled with the rules about third cars and what happened? No McRae, a a 'Rally GB' that is stuck in a corner of Wales which enlightened policing has yet to reach.
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - Algernon
Well, Ferrari are the one team who are realistically related to a car maker whose name they bear.

And we old blighters who love them had to suffer many a fruitless year, so why does anyone begrudge us some joy now?

And we can remember drivers probably nearly as good as MS - only one as good since the war, JMF - but they ain't around now.

So it is up to the F1 specialists to try to beat Ferrari and MS fair and square, not by fiddling rules.

OK?
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - frostbite
What was interesting was the 'unassisted' start making it's first appearance for many years - everyone got away from the grid, and that hasn't happened very often recently.
Formula 1 under way again (yawn) - Kevham
Dear Ron (Dennis),

Thank you very much for the way you selflessly provided us with your special brand of entertainment on Sunday. Or to put it another way... we get another chance to laugh at McLaren.

Ron, how long have your boys spent designing/testing/building this year's car? At least two or three times longer than everyone else?

Why, Ron? Because it was too unreliable to use its former version last year?

What happened in its first race, Ron? Did it brake down faster than a Minardi? Oops!

Well done Ron! Your "organisation" made me chuckle.

Yours, stifling a giggle,

To be fair, I don't think there is more information being displayed now, except the race order on the left of the screen flashing through the order as cars cross the start/finish line.

Having had the misfortune of relaxing at home to watch the GP, I really did the relaxation and fell asleep. Contrasting that to the 1980s and F1 was exciting and unmissable.

I'm currently reading Colin Chapman's biography and I've got the bit with the mighty Cosworth DFV and Lotus 49 are set to dominate F1. Those were the days albeit before my time but the thrill of it in my mind makes the book unputdownable.

I don't care about stop strategies, tyres, fuel intake, it's too complicated and makes the commentator talk utter drivel. What I want to see is great driving and maybe some overtaking.

Maybe F1 should ditch the stops, ditch the technology except in design and manufacture and put the drivers in the car with a real clutch, gearbox and engine all with mechanical linkages and no electronic aids. Make the engine a set capacity but allow for more driver control just like the era with 1500's with adjustable turbos. One set of tyres, one tank for fuel.

Then we'd see who were the good drivers.

Any sport which is about a number of things racing to finish first and has a decent arena
1. has a line across start (horses, althletes)
2. allows passing
3. has simple rules

Formula 1 has line by line starts, has tracks which do not allow passing (the only excitement is when the cars are stopped - pitstops/crashes) and has rules which mean the cars bear as much relation to evryday as the spaceshuttle has to a 747).

Sport? Joke!

I just can't get excited about F1 these days and didn't bother to watch on Sunday although SWMBO is an avid fan and commandeered the big television. I was relegated to watch the rugby on the spare.

"Did anyone else find the "new and improved" on-screen graphics a little on the tiny side?" - asked frostbite and then l'escargot's comments on the f0ntsize (magnitude of the melted stuff).

There are two driving issues here:

1. Bernie has signed an agreement with Granada to sell more widescreen TVs.

2. The F1 2004 computer games will have the new graphics - it's like Man U and the new shirts thing, you can't keep using the old one to be up to date.

But I noticed two more issues:

1. The black background blots out the picture behind.

2. At one point in qualifying, a driver matched the split time of the leader (say 28.946). What should have shown was current driver 28.946; best (FIAT?) driver 28.946; difference 0. Actually it said difference 28.946. I am concerned that TAG Heuer may have taken their watches with them when they went!

TBH f1 died with the retirement of Mansell/Piquet/Prost and the sad death of Senna.

Hats off to Ferrari/Schumacher for their dominance but it has strangled the life out of the "sport". I remember as a youngster looking forward to every other Sunday to watch it on the telly, now I cannot even bear to watch the highlights. ITV's awful coverage has not helped one bit either, far too much overkill before the event itself and then adverts all the way through.

The final straw for most will have been the race when Barichello was ordered to move over for Mr S (as if he needed the extra points at the end of the season anyway!)
Boring! - THe Growler
Yup watched it on Star TV this p.m. totally somnolent. How tedious. Hopefully they'll put some bikes on that circuit. You have also to understand that holding the thing there is also a political statement vis a vis Bahrain's trying to place itself on the map as an Arab democracy (cf. Growler's list of oxymorons).

R n R in Bahrain might look good if you're in KSA (lived in both 16 years) but best spend the money on a cheapo to BKK or MNL.

It was a disappointing race after the huge build up.
The gap between Ferrari and the rest similar to 2002.

I think inadvertently we found a good way to deal with this today. By which I mean keep abreast of the thing so we could converse intelligently about it later but not let it bother us.

5 of us had been out on our Harleys with our old ladies on the back for a good hard ride this avo in 95° heat and we pitched up hot and tired at the local watering hole for 18 oz BBQ steaks and ice cold beer with friends of similar persuasion.

The big screen had the race on satellite courtesy of ole Rupert.

Growlette had it right when she said it's OK but it's the motor-racing equivalent of elevator music, now can I have another drink please?

But it's a nice track. Get some bikes on there like Malaysia.

Later we watched the re-runs over a bottle of Jack. Snooze material for sure.

Boring! - 3500S
Watched the British Superbikes races on the BBC instead and gave F1 a wide berth. Now that was exciting, overtaking on the very tight Silverstone chicane, weaving under, blasting away on the straights and a few offs as well, utterly superb and thrilling to watch.

I can't help ITV have contributed to the demise of F1, putting ad breaks in during the race, the awful, truly awful pit commentary which quite frankly is more tedious than watching grass grow.

And the lack of anyone with pedigree commentating on the race, listening to Hunt the Shunt and Murray Walker could make up for a boring race but it seems a charisma free zone on ITV.
Boring! - THe Growler
Yup you said it,

Looking again at Star TV's efforts over lunch in the pub today I confess my irritation. Pimply know-nothing twenty-somethings commentating on Star TV who could not have found the place on a map 2 weeks ago refer to Bar-rain. It is Bah-rain, the aspirate in the middle is all important, it is a Persian word meaning "two seas". Secondly Bahrain is not "an oil-rich nation", it produces miniscule amounts. Its industrial economy is based on the Bapco refinery (pipelinefrom KSA), natural gas (Banagas), ship repair and dry dock (ASRY). The primary economy is built on financial services (offshore banking).

I do wish these kids would do their homework. Even more, that the lousy TV channel would do some QC, but then with old Rupe raking in the moolah why bother.

Growlette as always has the insight, Filipino version. Well of course they let this Schumacher guy win all the time. It's a deal -- they all split the prize money between them, can't you see that? Why you think they have Toyota ads on the track but no Ferrari ones? Means it's a set-up, right? Don't need to advertise cos they're gonna win anyhow.

With presidential elections coming up May 10 our senses are highly attuned to this kind of stuff.

But...the last word. Jensen Button was here a while back in Manila and confessed on TV he was happy on the F1 track but would be scared to drive in Manila traffic......even Growlette can beat that.......
Boring! - THe Growler
Yeah forgot one thing. Bernie needs a good barber. I have an excellent one down the street from me.
Overtaking! - patpending
I think Growler if Bernie does go to the Philippines to get his hair cut, it sounds like a new street race could be arranged while he is chatting to the barber (said haircut could take a while...)

Kai Ebel, RTL's pitlane commentator, has his stubble cut off in Manama (sp.?) and looked almost dapper.

The local crowds may not have been enormous and there was the perennial problem of the Red Leader, but this race at least gave us action! and overtaking! and these were actually shown.

Perhaps the UK commentary is a problem, Murray's radio background meant he was used to describing the scenes he could see in a "trousers on fire" way, and James Allen cannot fill that place.

At least there is real competition breaking out behind the Ferrari.

And Bahrain's peace message to the world was great to hear.

One thing I read from the press releases though: Warrd, the non-alcoholic champagne, is made from rosewater (slurp) pomegranate (yum) and trinj. Trinj? what is trinj? it must be motoring-related as it was all over Schumacher's overalls but I have found no explanation as to what it is, anyone help?

Overtaking! - DerekX
The main problem appears to be the difficulty in overtaking. The reason given is that the aerofoils disrupt the airflow and lessens the grip of the overtaking car.

Answer? Remove all aerofoils. This will mean:-

Cars will be more difficult to drive as less grip.
Cars would be able to overtake easier.
It would be the truly skillful drivers that would win.

OK it would slow the speed of the cars but it would be a whole lot more interesting.

I actually prefer watching the Nascar style racing on the ovals to F1 and it's available on Motors TV.
Overtaking! - smokie
Derekx

I hope you aren't suggesting that Schumie isn't a skilful driver! There are plenty of things about him to NOT like, but I don't really think his driving skills can be questioned...btw I am NOT a Schumie fan

I think someone above already said that the TV directors recognised the Ferrari supremacy and concentrated on the lower order, which I thought was good. There was actually some quite good stuff going on down there. Just ignore Ferrari and take each race as it comes and you might enjoy it (isn't football the same? One or two clubs dominating? But still many thousand get some pleasure from the underdogs)

And I think ITV coverage far superior to the Beeb, although Murray is missed. They give rounded coverage of the venue and it's surroundings, and Martin particularly is a mine of useful info, and interesting with it.

Overtaking! - DerekX
I completely agree with your comments. Schumie is a master at go carting and to him it would just be a big go cart.

However I still feel that making passing easier would make for more interesting racing.
Overtaking! - THe Growler
For the record "Warrd" means "flower". Rosewater is used a lot in Arabic/Persian dishes (Iranian ice cream flavoured with rose is the best I've ever ever tasted) and Bahrain has a large Shi'ite population of Iranian descent. "Trinj" is oranges. Add the pomegranate juice and I bet Mum'll be cursing when she has to do the washing, trying to get that lot out.
