Car cleaning question - Rebecca {P}
Why do the front wheels get so much dirtier than the rear wheels?

(no prizes for guessing who cleaned the car yesterday)
Car cleaning question - billy25
probably because they are first into that muddy puddle! so they squish the water out of the way (usually down car sides) before the rear wheels get there. :-)
front brakes may be harder worked than the rears as well.

billy.
Car cleaning question - BazzaBear {P}
Front discs are larger than rear (assuming you have rear disc brakes), and much more of the braking effort is applied there, therefore much more brake dust.
Car cleaning question - Andrew-T
Front brakes always do more work as the weight of the car gets thrown forward - probably a typical ratio would be 70:30 %. Of course if you normally brake hard it could be higher than that. In the ultimate of course, it reaches 100:0 and you may go over the handlebars.
Car cleaning question - Dynamic Dave
Modern cars almost all have front brake discs, but some still have rear brake drums. The dust is easliy washed off the front brakes and gets on the wheels, but the dust in the rears mainly remain in the brake drums.

Buy dust free pads then :-)

I never have problems with brake dust on my alloys.

They aren't much more than standard pads.

EBC greenstuff pads are meant to be good for dust-free performance. Personally I like my brakes to really stop the car, so live with a bit more dust and a bit of squealing from time to time and use Ferodo DS2500. If I had false teeth they would have gone through the screen, the way these babies pull your car up. Mind you, I have to put copperslip on the back of the pads about every 4,000 miles or live with the sound of a tortured cat each time I brake at low speeds.

tip: Once you have got your wheels all lovely and shiny, put a long-lasting car polish on them. The wheels will clean up a lot easier next time as the dust doesn't adhere so readily.
