2004 Mondeo 1.8 LX Bargain?? - dodo
See that I can buy a 2004 Mondy for less than £10k. Having ditched the beemer (and yes no one lets you out of junctions except other BMW drivers) I'm very tempted by the Mondeo. How many mpg can I expect? Are these ex hire ? Would I be better with a Vectra (which I hear is really heavy on fuel in 1.8 guise)Are Mondeos good cars? Over to you

I see from the add they are delivery mileage only. Dont know if they are grey imports or dealer demo pre registered. They are not ex hire cars for all intents they appear to be brand new.

Mondeos? good cars? yes. At under 10 grand they are excelent cars.

Considering this new Astra is retailing at 10K plus in its most basic guise, this Mondeo offer has to be a great deal. I'm not aware that motorpoint deal in "grey imports" or the like and would think that the whole deal is entirely trustworthy.

The Mondeo is an excellent car, and I gather the petrol engines were Ford's best yet and very reliable.
Its a bargain!

The Mondeo is very good car to drive, although the 1.8 is a bit underpowered (unless they've uprated it) and it's economical (I've had 40mpg out of one on country driving).

Under £10K for a 2004 model is a bargain - what's the source of the car?

Ex-hire shouldn't be a problem. It may also have been driven around by Ford staff.
2004 Mondeo 1.8 LX Bargain?? - Marc
The cars will not have been driven around by anyone as they're brand new (04 plate) I presume the post relates to the ad for Motorpoint on the right hand side of this website in "News"

I don't agree that the 1.8 is underpowered, it can cruise all day at high speed and is pretty quick off the mark if you put your foot down. It certainly doesn't exhibit the flatness you get in a 1.6 Focus at around 60-70 mph in 5th.

The 1.8 Duratec HE engine was originally 110bhp and was uprated to 125 in 2001 if memory serves me correctly

They might be sourced from Eire or they might be from Cyprus. Won't Motorpoint tell you where it is from? If you are the first owner on the V5 there isn't a problem with source, or is there?

If they are Eire imports, they're cheap enough and with the right warranty/spec, etc. to be well worth the money.

However, if they're from Cyprus there may be spec differences - and will be warranty differences - so that I would proabbly pay the £11,400 or so from a main dealer for an easy life.

Posibly not what you want but have you considered a 1 or 2 year old Mondeo? They depreciate massively and make excellent 2nd hand buys in my opinion. I bought a 1998 1.8LX 2 yrs ago for £3,000 with 40,000 miles on the clock. It's an excellent car and has cost nothing apart from routine servicing (now has 80,000 miles and I shall keep it as long as possible).

I know used cars aren't for everyone but certainly worth a thought - you can get a very good car for relatively little money.

Fair enough, but with the new Mondeo out, prices for the older cars seem to have firmed up a bit and an equivalent (1.8 LX, 40k, X or Y plate) would be £6k+ now.

They still make excellent second hand buys but £3,500 or so of depreciation in three years for a very good, large, new car is still a decent deal, especially considering the very low maintenance and repair costs that buying new will involve.

They are very good cars.
Having covered a fair few miles in both a 2003 Mondeo 2.0lx and a 2003 MB 2.0 C-Class 2.0 I have to say I actually prefer the Mondeo (and I'm a C-Class owner!).
At less than £10k they are an incredible bargain and I can't see the point in buying anything else if you want that size/style of car (unless new Avensis or Accords are on offer at that price!).

Do these carry the 3 yr Ford Warranty ?

It's a very good price from Motorpoint, but make sure that you are doing a like-for-like comparison. For example the cars listed at that price seem to be saloons rather than hatchbacks.

It still looks to be a very good deal though! Are these the new (albeit minimally modified) model or the last of the 'old' stock?

Also £9799 is NOT the on-the-road price - from their website:

"Price Excludes Optional Preparation Charge of £62.13 and Road Fund Licence".

"Vehicles may be imported and therefore the specification may differ from UK specifications. All new vehicles are right-hand drive, display speeds in mph and built to a European specification which conforms to UK standards. New vehicles are unregistered while on display, however you may not be the 1st registered keeper.

Any new car prices quoted are the unregistered prices and are plus £38 registration fee and road fund licence at the current rate. All savings shown are against UK List Prices. Vehicles advertised are from group stock and change daily. All printed prices are correct at time of press. E&OE."

I've owned a few 1.8 Mondeos over the last few years.

The 125ps Duratec HE 1.8 is plenty powerful enough for the car and overall the Mondeo ownership experience is only let down by the poor customer service from the majority of dealers.

The cars are listed as 4dr models.
£10044 inclusive (i think) is still a steal of a price wherever the car has been sourced and regardless of the fact that you may not be the first registered keeper.

The 2004 model LX is well specced, has cruise control, trip computer, air con, electric front windows, ABS with all round disc brakes, CD/Radio, outside temp display etc., and there are some easy modifications such as the front fog light kit.

I wish that I could stretch to the price because I'd not hesitate to buy one.
