Looking to purchase a used 7 seater, can pay up to around £18k maximum but would be happy to spend much less if a suitable vehicle can be found. Do not want small turbo engines and would rather have a relaxed power train not stressed that can do 100k miles some of it in Europe over the next 5 years. So essentially 20k miles per year but could be a little less. Looking for reliability and ease of ownership rather than brand or image. A vehicle that comes to mind is the Prius Plus but welcome other ideas.

Dacia Jogger if you go for the petrol Hybrid and the Vauxhall Combo/Citroen Berlingo/Peugeot Rifter have the 1.5l diesel.

Do you want seven seats all the time or just the ability to seat seven occasionally? If it's the latter, a Prius Plus or the suggested Jogger would be good (although I'm not convinced you'd find one for £18k). You might also consider a Kia Carens.

If it's the former, a Hyundai i800 might be better. A Ssangyong Turismo, if you really don't care about image, has vast interior space.

You can certainly get into a Jogger for £18k, but as the OP doesn't want a small turbo its a moot point.

The Prius Plus?, well space is quite compromised in the third row, but that is par for the course regarding 7 seaters of this type (though ironically, third row passengers in the Jogger seem to be fairly well catered for). So (as has been said) how suitable the Prius Plus is for the OP will depend on how often the third row will be in use, and whether occupied by adults or children (if the latter, no problem). Maybe also worth pointing out that with all three rows of seats in place, the boot is tiny (as is the case with all comparable rivals, including the Jogger)

As for the avoidance of small turbo engines, while that may be ultimately better for long term reliability, it isn't necessarily going result in a more enjoyable experience if travelling longer distances fully laden. Taking the Prius Plus as an example, while fine around town and lower speed country roads, they aren't much fun on higher speed roads because the hybrid system will be doing very little to help what is ultimately a fairly modest n/a 1.8 petrol engine in a fairly heavy car. A VW Tiguan (or Sharan if more space is needed) with the 1.4TSI would be way more relaxed on the motorway!

We were talking about the hybrid.

Appreciate the input, realistically 7 seats would not be used all the time but probably would 30% of all use. Looking on Autotrader there appears to be vehicles like the Zafira Tourer with a reasonable size 1.8 petrol. What are thoughts on considering older. Is the consensus that they probably would not be fit to cover 20k miles per year?

That is only part of the question though, the other is whether the third row would be required to fit adults. Also, would the use of all seven seats be whilst travelling in Europe (or indeed going on hols anywhere)?. If so, you are going to need something bigger (or a large roof box, or a tailer) because a Zafira Tourer with all seven seats in use has 152 litres of boot space!. Other similar 7 seaters may have a little more, but to get more than about 200 litres you'd need to go up a step in size.

Re whether a Zafira Tourer 1.8 would manage 20k miles per year?, no reason why not if it is in good fettle and continues to be looked after. But the youngest 1.8 is going to be a 2015 car, so finding a good example may not be easy.

But for doing that many miles, I'd be thinking diesel. Know there is some risk re DPF's and how previous owners have used the car, but even so!

The Vauxhall Zafira initially came to mind, but then you mentioned you were willing to spend up to £18k. The Zafira is available for a lots less and categorised as an MPV rather than an SUV.

My father owned a 2006 Zafira 1.6. Generally happy. It was easy to drive and handled family day trips well. However, like most 7-seaters, the two rear seats can feel a bit claustrophobic, especially since the windows don’t roll down. They're acceptable for adults but more suitable for children. I was impressed that the Zafira's1.6 petrol engine could handle the whole family on board.

Another option to consider is the Toyota Verso, which I test drove a few years ago. It’s a decent car, but not particularly thrilling to drive, especially on winding country roads.

If you can find a good one, I recommend the Mazda 5. While I haven't owned it, I've test driven had a Mazda 6 for while, so familiar with Mazda engine and dynamic, so there might be some similarities. The Mazda 5 has sliding doors and, in my opinion, will likely offer a better driving experience than the Toyota Verso or the Zafira.

I also looked into the Toyota Estima. Many are imported, and they receive good reviews on this forum. However, servicing and parts availability could be something to keep in mind.

Toyota verso all day long although rear seats only for kids . I’ve had two great reliability including present 1.8 verso cvt nine years old. No slouch either acceleration surprised a few! Still some good ones about. Go for late 2015 onwards with updated safety’s features.

There are a lot of Estimas about, very popular as taxies in some areas. All are imported. I know from experience that you can get a lot for your money if you buy an import, but it can all go pear-shaped if a major component needs replacing. You are on your own and may have to privately import parts from Japan. It can be done.

I’ve had a few Ford Galaxy’s over the years, and taken them to over 200k miles with nothing other than routine servicing and maintenance. They are a true 7 seater for adults and don’t break the bank to run. You should be able to find a good one within your budget.
