Will we turn into Cuba? - barney100

Cubans had a ban on importing cars and so were obliged to run their old models for years. The streets are full of old American cars, with a lower supply of ice cars over here will our motorists adopt a similar approach and hang on to their vehicles for a very long time?

Funny thing that.

Age plus health (or lack of ir) plus being happy with what I have has made me into a Cuban.

Only if Cuba has a few million people owning and running EVs alongside increasingly ancient petrol vehicles. Kind of like Cuba without the affluent, rum and cigars. Or the weather, beaches, crumbling architecture,... We do have crumbling road surfaces so there is that.

But seriously if you want to run a petrol car just do so but accept you'll get more financially reamed ( by the guv) than your neighbour. Seems fair enough.

It seems likely motorists will be increasingly taxed out of ICE. I think the bigger cost will be the difficulty in getting spares and if we can at what price. Also will there be garages who will have the knowledge to fix ICE in twenty years? How many 16 or 17 year olds doing mechanics courses will have experience of replacing a cambelt. Some garages can't do it properly now, as I found out quite a few years ago.

There is no particular shortage of new cars, in fact some of the discounts available indicate plentiful supply.

Very few people will care or want to run an old ice as their main car. They'll buy what is available on the used market.

It'll take a while though, even in 10 years time less than 20% of 10 year old cars will be EVs.

Still won't be having one and the more they stamp their little '' too full of their own importance/omnipotence'' feet the more people like me will say no.

I've said here before, the word No needs to be used far more often than of late where self important apparatchiks are concerned.

What a curious question. UK imports and exports hundreds of thousands of cars each year. Cuba doesn't make cars so imports them from all over the place, especially the far east. But not from the UK. I wonder why.......

Cuba imports only a few cars with massive import duties and probably corruption involved. I understand they are mainly for the elite - politicians, doctors, business managers etc.

The average Cuban has no more chance of buying a new car than a UK average wage earner driving a new Aston Martin.

They don't buy from the UK because we are too expensive. Most legal Cuba car imports come from China - I assume the Chinese government is happy to subsidise them in the interests of developing longer term economic relationships.

Far less. Many don't realise how dirt poor they are. Less than 10yrs avr UK take home pay would buy a new Vantage. Ten years of $300 pa is less than some people here spend on a bicycle. No wonder so many are emigrating.......in stark contrast to here.

Last I checked they were the only country in the world to show sustainable development by the generally accepted criteria (HDI >1, EF <1)

So no.

Where's the profit in that?

I daresay they have started drowning the revolution in Coca Cola by now, anyway.
