BMW 540Xi - Subscription charges for purchased features - Barry Barnes

I took a new high spec BMW 540Xi 3 years ago and was not told about a subscription and now they have removed traffic data and want me to pay £89 p.a for this important thing packaged with a load of things I do not want - Alexa etc - I do not want an entertainment centre or sit in car fiddling with downloading on my Iphone but I want traffic data that I have on two older cars free of charge. I will sell the car that I bought for touring as its now like a useless r****** skip and buy a new car of another brand that will assure me no subscriptions. They will not lose this one 'order' but several. Its a bib mistake to fleece customers who pay a lot for their cars.

Just plug your phone in and use Waze or Google Maps.

Something seems a bit fishy here.

The OP has owned the car, minus the all important (apparently) "traffic data", for three years now and is away to sell it because the car is useless without it?

If not having that feature was such a big issue and rendered the car useless, why keep it for that long?

As a BMW owner, AIUI, the initial subscription for maps and real time traffic comes with the new car and covers the first 3 years. Subsequent years can be purchased through the BMW Connected drive website. My annual map updates and real time traffic info cost £79 per year but on a Mini that’s 3 years old, I updated last week for £30. Don’t know why it’s less than half a BMW update. Clearly the salesman should have covered this as part of the handover, and the OP seems to be throwing the toys out of the pram over the need to spend £89 (£1.70 per week) for a car that probably cost over £60,000! Wait till he needs new front pads and discs, there’ll be no change out of £1500. Been there with a 6 year old X3. Plus The car is not rendered useless. Just use Waze or Google maps!

That argument goes both ways. A customer spend £60k and they will want another £100 per year. Sure, BMW would have to pay for updating maps and real time traffic data. There are cost for paying for tech staff. However, the same information is used by newer BMW models which are still in production. The same map data is used over multiple car models.

This is the kind of thing which create petty irritation in life and wasting your life on chores and even having to pay to sort out annual subscriptions.

Sure people can use Google, but many of these cars don't have phone mounts etc...

You don't need a phone mount. You plug your phone into the USB and start Apple Carplay or Android Auto, which then gives you access to Google or Waze on the infotainment screen. On a sw***y beemer, it may even be wireless.
