Mazda CX-30 - Extended warranty - davecooper

My CX-30 has just hit 3 years old and the manufacturers warranty has now expired. I have been quoted around £350 to extend this for another year. I wasn't going to bother but got a call from Mazda warranty people yesterday to remind me it was now out of warranty and did I want to take out the extended warranty. It has made me think again about taking this out but should I stick to my original decision? This has probably been covered on here a number of times before but I would just like to hear opinions on extended warranty schemes.

Usual thing - you are placing a bet, you may win or lose. If the car has been reliable so far, keep the money and grumble when something serious happens. Or spend it and grumble when nothing happens. Or you could keep the money and enjoy yourself when nothing happens. :-)

But if something does happen down the line calling for big bucks, a maker's warranty can bring goodwill benefits.

Yes, it is always a dilemma I know. Supposedly the figure they gave me is a "special" rate which is good for the next few days. I will possibly only use the warranty for 6 months as the finance is up in March.

You can be cheeky though. Call them and express your disappointment that they told you warranty expired when you thought 7-year warranty is now industry standard. Next time you'd buy a Kia or Toyota :-)

That might cause them to offer you a discounted rate warranty.

Mazda is still a small seller in UK so they may consider offering something as goodwill compared to large volume manufacturers like VW, Ford, Vauxhall etc.

PS: I don't know why most manufacturers factor this cost into price and offer a longer warranty in first place.

Looking at the reviews of this model , it would appear that it’s not a particularly reliable product from Mazda . Any repair on this is likely to exceed the £350 warranty. I guess it’s a question of do you feel lucky .

For myself, unless £350 is going to cause hardship, I'd say go for it. If you sell later, you can always sell with the extende warranty.

I think I will extend the warranty. Even though this is my 6th Mazda and I have had 100% reliability from them over 18 years, sods law does dictate that I will suffer a failure of something expensive as soon as I have no cover.

I’d be very surprised if anything went wrong with a petrol Mazda in year 4, I’d personally keep the money and drive on. I’ve bought, sold and owned plenty of older Mazda’s without any mechanical failures. Just brakes, tyres and exhaust, none of which a warranty would cover. But as with any car, you can be unlucky and things can go wrong. I’ll wager that it’ll be perfectly reliable though. Plus assuming it has a full Mazda service history there’s likely to be some goodwill should something fail within months of the warranty ending. The majority of complaints relating to Mazda’s in recent years is due to diesel engine issues.

Assuming you have had your servicing done by the dealer-I would forego the extra warranty and invest the £350 towards another next dealer service. If anything needs “warranty” attention in the next year, then you can say-“I’ve totally maintained it according to Mazda guidelines etc?
