After having our car engine on our carlton practically rebuilt, new head gasket cam shaft etc. We came to start the car and got this awful buzzing from the fuel relay, we got a new one from a scrap yard and came to start it again it turned over and then cut out (not surprising it had been stood for 4 weeks) any way after charging the battery we then came to start it and it was as though the battery was almost flat, despite having boooster cables on it. Could this be a faulty starter motor? Also what is the best way to get a car going after an engine rebuild will it need an initial \"bosst\" of power to get it going as there is no oil in the tappets

Remove all plugs and carefully turn the engine over with a socket drive on the end of the crank at least 4 complete turns. This will ensure you are not clipping the valves with the pistons. Assuming you are happy with the cam to crank timing then refit revisit turning the car over with a good battery and after visiting all the battery, Starter and Earth connections. This should also prime the oil pump. Refit the plugs whist you top up the battery charge and hopefully she will fire up. Good Luck. Peter

Yes. I was going to say check the earth strap (battery to body AND the body to engine strap - which may have been removed durning the rebuild work).
