Evening All. I’m thinking of buying a ten year old 1.6 petrol Qashqai. Seems like a nice genuine car with low miles and one owner. MOT history looks good with no advisories. Anyone know what I should look out for on this model please?

If it's manual, it's probably as good as any other ten year old car. Check there's no vapour or coolant smell from the exhaust when starting from cold.

If it's a CVT auto, it's best avoided.

Yes it’s a manual sorry. Not particularly cheap but looks like a nice car. I think the 1.6 petrol has a chain cam?

Definitely avoid auto and diesel. Timing chains on the petrol can wear prematurely. Also car infotainment systems can be problematic, with replacement units at £2.5 k

Steering racks can fail also. If you absolutely must have one then the 1.6 is the one to have, but don’t get these mixed up with the robust Nissan’s of old. These are more Renault than Nissan. Check for knocks from the steering when driving, feel for any unevenness when going lock to lock and check all the electrics work. Ask to hear it start from stone cold to listen for timing chain rattles and before starting it pop the bonnet and have a feel for any heat in the engine, if it’s warm then they’ve started it to hide either poor starting or a rattle.

I’d sooner have a genuine Japanese car like a Toyota, Honda or Mazda, but a well cared for example could be worthy if you can find one. Check the plastic panel on the boot lid also which is often held on with glue or tape. Other bits of trim can be brittle also in typical Renault fashion.

Thanks All, really helpful as always.

Yes the boot lid trim came away in my hands as soon as I touched it. A bit tatty inside so I gave it a miss.

It’s not really one I’d buy to be honest. A good Mazda 3, Honda Civic or Toyota Auris will usually give better service. If you can find a Ford Focus or C-Max with the robust 1600 petrol that’s not too crusty underneath it’ll be worthy too.

Try a Suzuki Vitara, less popular but great value and nailed together well.

Ten years mostly outside with 160,000 miles or ten years mostly inside with 40,000 miles?
