Classic cars that is. Seen three this evening - an immaculate MGB in red and a good wholesome exhaust sound (and smell) as it passed. Also two cars I see each summer which must be local - a slightly dog-eared FIAT X1/9, I think the owner must have a full-time job keeping on top of the corrosion. The third was a 1990 Golf convertible, sounding a bit rough in need of a tune I think. What really surprised me was how tiny it was but then the MK1 on which it was based was a small car by MK2 standards. I think I would take the MG...

Yes the nice weather is good for car spotting. I saw an absolutely immaculate etype the other day, beautiful thing ,tiny as you say. I think the current VW up is a similar size to the mk 1 golf, car sizes are ridiculous these days. Have you seen an old cortina or Granada lately? Tiny again and they were large cars back in the day. But although I look and enjoy I think the reality of ownership isn't as good as one might imagine! My neighbour has a rover 2000, a ride in that brings home how good a modern car is

One of the regular sights round here is a Reliant Robin - it even sounds in mechanically quite good order.

It's always lovely following an older classic, the whiff of unburned fuel is the smell of the 60s and 70s :-)

And yes, cars of 30+ years ago are small compared to their equivalents today. I was recently looking over a very nice Dolomite Sprint, and wondering how 5 of us used to cram into the one my mate owned back in the early 80s.

I had a drive in an MGB GT in the 70s and it was one of my most disappointing driving experiences.. Apart from the looks it was noisy and gutless which was about par for the course then.. Nice to see some of these old cars still on the road. Here in west Wales there are quite a few daily drivers. Have seen 2 Morris minors and a Stag and also parked up in farms there are a few oldies rotting away!

They go very well indeed with the Rover V8 lump up front :-) but that's not surprising as the V8 put out nearly twice as much torque and 40% more power than the wheezy old B-series engine.

I had one for a couple of years in the 90s, I still miss the V8 warble and thrust when giving it some throttle away from a roundabout or when overtaking (it was advisable to wait until the front wheels were straight-ish before giving it the berries, the back end could step out very suddenly if you gave it too much while in a bend).

Of course, it wasn't fast by modern standards but the V8 was the engine the car should always have had.

Within 5 minutes walk of each other in Otley a couple of days ago were a Rover SD1 (2300cc), a 1973 Rover 2000, Morris Minor, Triumph Spitfire IV and a 1964 Beetle.
Im assuming all owned by the same person and scattered along the road.

Strange isn't it, MGB's must have the most exclusive exhaust note along with a moggy minor of any other car, coincidentally supplied a flasher unit to a MGB owner today, had it on the shelf! Car was immaculate and smelt lovely, a mixture of oil, unburnt fuel and turtle wax.....

The reason that most of these classics are still on the road , is they are totally fixable. Can’t imagine a modern car being around in 50 years time . A Tesla on the “ car and classic “ forum?

'tis the season of classic car shows. It seems every school/church fete includes one. My facebook pages are full of them.

I was at Italian lakes very recently and could not believe the number of mark one Pandas still on the road and looking fresh.

4x4 very popular.

One of the pleasures of owning a classic is getting a free pass as an exhibitor. I shall be extolling the virtues of my unrestored TR7 DHC with its patina of 43yrs use at the Hollowell Steam Rally on Saturday.

It is not often for me to come upon a car I have not heard of before, but it happened at a vintage and steam show the other Sunday with my Dad. Came upon a handsome 1930's looking car called a Cheynard Walcker.

I've since discovered that it is a French brand which made cars and commercial vehicles between 1898 and 1946 (apparently in the mid 1920's, they were the fourth largest car maker in France). They then built Cheynard Walcker badged Peugeot commercial vehicles up to the 1970's.

As far as I can determine, the car I saw was an Aigle 4s from the mid 1930's and was front wheel drive.

" MGB exclusive exhaust note". I think this is due to the head design with only 3 exhaust ports on the BL A series engine.

B series on the MG . A series, mini , 1100 etc

True, though the B-series lump also has a siamesed exhaust port for the centre pair of pots. A common mod on the MGBs is to replace the factory manifold with an LCB (long centre branch) set of headers which frees up about 5bhp on its own.

The best mod I came across on the old 'B' series was a stage one camshaft. Little or no extra power, but more torque. Made it a much more drivable car, although it was already. Improved the economy. I got the impression it was virtually a 'blueprinted' cam.

Been out cycling in the countryside quite a bit lately, where many classic cars have been stretching their legs.

I've seen a few MGBs, Jags (including a lovely E-type and one 'Inspector Morse' mkII the other day), plus a smattering of others such as a 1970s Porsche 911, a not so old mid 90s Ferrari F355 and one mint condition 1960s US classic convertable - it might've been a Cadillac.

Oh, and a good number of older gents riding classic motorbikes (didn't know what) in groups.

Most of the above observed outside country pubs. :-)

Yes, on the weekend I was stuck in a lengthy queue behind a line of traction engines crawling at a snale pace between Tetbury to Cirencester, on the opposite way an eye candy to behold a Lamborghini Miura flying low, ten minutes later another eye relief a 1963 Aston Martin Lagonda at a much easy pace. Lovely stuff.

I wonder ... classic cars with older style white letters on black background licence plates ... can these be read by APNR as used at various places eg car parks and / or roadside cameras? Has technology stepped so far these older vehicles escape?

Interesting question. But those cars probably pay no VED anyway, so perhaps it's only insurance or speeding they might avoid ?

Followed a Reliant Kitten for a few miles today, can't remember the last time I saw one of them?.

A bit further along the road I saw a Citroen BX estate heading in the opposite direction.

Always liked the BX, brother had one and it was supremely comfortable. Bit flimsy for my liking but great value. Bit easier to work on as well compared to the GS.
